To me, BBB has a bit of grit to it (a great part of which is Baloff) that the later Exodus, although it has some cool riffs, doesn't really have - I find it a bit sterile although I like it in principle.

QUIT DEBATING ALREADY!!!!!! ALL METAL AND ROCK SHOULD BE DIRTY!!!!
....That doesn't mean that I dislike what you lot would call 'clean'.It has to be played with conviction at least...But other than that my point is ALWAYS,'Since when has heavy metal been about sounding perfect?!'
METAL DAVE,Weymouth Bay Area.
My band is DEFINATELY dirty!!!Nuff Said!!

Clean all the way, I'm a melody whore and the really dirty stuff just lacks the musicality I like in my music. They often lack that special something that makes them get stuck in your head for days.

The great thing about dirty rock music is probably your neck hurting for days after a great gig, knowing you've had a great time rather than being to clinical and particular!
The vibe, attitude, and energy is more important in heavy metal than anything else. It's there to be felt.
Making too clean an album to me sounds to compromised and lacks full commitment to the idea of musical rebellion against commercial and tame metal.
I agree with what Lemmy said once,"Rock n' Roll's supposed to be noisey that's the point of it!"
Tarting up a metal album to make it 'accessable' would be like a killer shooting somebody through the head and hoping they don't die!!
METAL DAVE,WEYMOUTH.

Dont know about that man, Destruction are so fucking musical and they are pretty mucky (Eternal Devestation is anyway) and I really like it when you have crap production but the strength of the songs really shines through like Leave Scars and Darkness Descends from dark Angel.

i tend to agree, dirty is good; chaotic and frantic thrash is awesome, but dont overlook cleaner stuff! dont forget flo jo! id say they were more a 'clean' thrash band.

My ultimate goal for my band sound wise is to have realy tight and intricate clean and powerful riff tecnique mixed with a realy dirty and raw sound and delivery.
Old Destruction and Kreator records are like that to me.

Leave Scars is a pretty weak album though, and the production is absolutely shocking, talk about not being able to hear anything but noise (oh and the vox are poor)..
It is possible to be dirty with clean produciotn, and sounds dirty, but only throuhg the production. It really depends on what record you're listening to!

I would agree that Leave Scars is weaker than both Darkness Descends and Time Does Not Heal but I wouldn't say it's weak. The first three and last two songs are good imo.

I do have to admit that, after initial preferring Ron to Don, I now think that Don is the better of the two singers. It'd have been cool if Don had stayed for Leave Scars. Another weird thing about Leave Scars is that the tuning sounds all over the place - from E to D and back again on different songs. Why DFA went to D live I don't know either, perhaps to help Ron sing the DD stuff.
