There is nothing demanding in the musicianship of AC/DC, and yet they are a great band. If I wanted to witness a virtuoso performance I would probably go to a classical concert - when OTT virtuosity is mixed with heavy metal, it almost invariably produces horrible results.

P.S. Why have you spelled "excuse" wrong twice on one page? :-k [-( :boohoo: .......

In that case, I'm not sure why you cited Testament in your original post. Not all guitar vituosos resort to playing Neoclassical stuff. Alex Skolnick certainly doesn't and a lot of what he plays fits the music well.

Fair point, not a great example. I guess I was just making the point that the raw, "sloppy" sounding bands can often have more atmosphere and character than more "skilled" and polished acts, for me.

Solos are always necessary in AC/DC.

i think don't think good musicianship (if we're talking about a good knowledge of music) is vital, look at dave mustaine!! but also it doesn't hurt to have such knowledge!!

WHAT IS MEANT BY MUSICALITY??!! IT MEANS SEVERAL THINGS TO ME AND IM NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN!!!!

jonny_boy34 wrote:Technical wizardy for the sake of it (Malmsteen for example) is not something I enjoy. But musicianship in songwriting is important to me. I still love AC/DC and other bands who know how to rock my socks off, but I'll also very much appreciate a band who know something about music and how to write an amazing song. Diagonal for the love of goodness, Tool and Opeth. You'll find indeed that the kind of prog I enjoy is not the Dream Theater type of prog where everyone just shows off all the time, but the kind where everything is done for a reason (even improv sections have their purposes), the songs are well crafted and the music is brilliant. I'll use Opeth obviously as an example - Mikael Akerfeldt is an amazing guitarist, but you'll never hear him going mad in a solo, his solos are always musically amazing, and the melody and emotion comes first. That's when good musicianship can be used to write amazing songs and guitar parts. And that is a lovely thing indeed.

In your perception? I mean, I've heard Tool... I've heard Opeth.... heard Dream Theater... but none of those bands kicks me in the balls very hard... and what u mean technical wizrdry... Michael Akerfeld is always trying to be amaizng surely?!?! But Symphony X... I bum them so hard as amazing musicians but I doubt many people on here do... but they may be 'showing off' or maybe they're just writing the music that comes naturally to them, as amazing musicians?!

Hmm not that important to me, i am personally not a soloist person - rhythm guitar usually gives me the greater pleasure tbh. The only solo that i truly love is the one from Tornado of Souls.

I dont think a band has to have great musician's in or masters of the craft to make good music. Listen to things like diamond head -brilliant music but very simple (most of the time).

I do love hearing like John Shaffer (iced earth) and some of his Rhythm guitar just makes me go weak at the knees (like anything from the first album...he has an insane picking rhythm). I do hate it when a band decides to be guitar wanks for the hell of it: satriani, gibert, vai, malmesteen, etc but i do like it when its implimented well - Like Marty Freidman solos or Chris Poland Stuff. Also a big fan of Alex Shnolic, hes insanley good but doesnt compramise the overall feel of the music like ...say Kirk Hammet who sets up his wah - wah pedal and goes mental for 3 minutes (on every fucking song from death magnetic) and it just sounds like shit....kirk hammets solos got mainly poor after ride the lightning, James does better solos then him nowadays (and dave mustaine is still the king of solos :D lol)
