Personally, I see Venom as the forefathers of thrash and whatever band i might be listening to frequently, they can never replace venom. Just interested to know what other people's opinions on them are, as not everyone sees them as the biggest band in the genre. ps the latest venom album is beast!

Venom were the first "thrash" band i got into. Before them, i loved motorhead, saxon etc but Venom appealed because they were noisy and so extreme (it was 82!!!!) and i still rate both welcome to hell and black metal as classic thrash albums!! They were considered a joke, partly because their music was the noisiest around at the time which was given any major exposure, and also because cronos had a habit of pposing like a total twat in every picture he had taken!!! No they are not the best musicians, no they are not the fastest, no they are not the heaviest, but EVERY thrasher has to listen to those first 2 albums, because they are part of musical history!!!!

I remember sitting in my parents front room with you listening to my picture disc of "Welcome to Hell" on my mono record player. You sure it was '82? My first metal record was "Piece of Mind" which was out May '83, so I think Venom came a bit later on that year.

wasn't Welcome to Hell released in '82, Black Metal '83?

I fucking love Venom!!!!!!! Sure, the production was pretty crap, and the instruments weren't always in time, and the vocals are quite funny (well, I think so), especially with all the 'Cronos sounds' (uuuugh, aaaaargh, etc) :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysKNvWscufs

The funniest thing is, the whole black metal genre was invented by people taking Venom too seriously

Venom are still one of my favourite 'thrash' bands, they played like Motorhead but heavier, faster and more filthy nasty disgustingly, plus all thier photos are fucking great (lean back as far as you can and pull a silly face!!!!!)

WTH '81, BM '82, AWWS '83, P '85 and don't forget the singles too. What a work rate! Could Venom be the most overlooked Thrash band? They were so early that they tend to get forgotten, but they are ESSENTIAL.

I've never listened to Venom. They're just one band I've constantly overlooked.

Very influential, but like Hellhammer very primitive.

I saw Venom last year and they were better than I'd expected. However, they're one of those bands (like Motorhead) that have never interested me.
