The wife brought me a guitar for me b/day and a "learn to play" book, but it's really hard going.
Can I ask all you AXE MASTERS out there your opinion on the best way to learn?
Is it worth forking out for personal tuition?
Or is there a book/computer course you would recommend??

Yeah, in my opinion it is worth going to guitar lessons especially if you know the guitar teacher to be good. I know so many self-taught guitarists who have bad habits that prevent them from playing as well as they could. It's also quite difficult to teach yourself theory from scratch.

I agree with that as i am in that boat. I can't really afford lessons so i am stumped. Theory is a real cunt, i still can't get my head around 99% of it. Lessons are the way to go.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

I started learning guitar before the advent of YouTube and such like too. IMO, one of the most important parts of learning guitar is to look at how guys like Paul Gilbert play and trying to emulate their style.

couldn't disagree more really, i think those bad habits can sometimes set you apart from the crowd of perfectly machanised guitar playing...
play with feeling, not with a book, you can always fill in the holes of your playing with theory later...

Fuck theory tbh.
Lessons can help get a few basic techniques covered, but after that I think it's best to just teach yourself. Saying that, my guitar teacher wasn't really into metal - if you have a teacher who shares your tastes then it's probably worth sticking with.
