Old School Death Metal

Postby Stevedot2 on Wed Feb 17, 2010 8:30 pm

Hello UK Thrashees,

Can anybody recommend me some decent old school stylee death metal? I don't really know much, but I love Death Breath, still a bit thrashy but deathy too. Also the first Death album is nice. I'm not a fan of mega br00tal stuff, just looking for something heavy as meatballs. If that even makes sense.

Kthx,
Stevedot2.

Morgoth - Cursed
Morbid Angel - Alters of Madness
Obituary - Cause of Death

Best Death album for me is Spiritual Healing. I could go all out here but last time i did i get shit for it for some reason.

Entombed - Left Hand Path
Death - Leprosy
Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness
Obituary - Slowly We Rot / Cause of Death
Bolt Thrower - Realm Of Chaos / Warmaster

I'd consider the above to be pretty much essential OSDM albums, they were certainly the must-haves back then.

Also worth a look would be:
Benediction - Grind Bastard
Deicide - Deicide
Nocturnus - The Key
Space is curved
Either that or my car pulls to the left...

Harmony Corruption is prime. I got it a few years ago on record for £3 and its been a favourite since. If The Truth Be Known is one of the best Napalm Death tracks going. Propper brill.

Dismember - Like An Everflowing Stream
Autopsy - Severed Survival
Deicide - Legion

Also, if you like Death Breath Wolverine Blues by Entombed might be worth a try. It's kinda similar, not really death metal but bloody good anyway.

OK, I just listened to Death Breath and it isn't similar at all, but fuck it, listen to Wolverine Blues anyway. I reckon within a few posts everyone will start mentioning the most obscure bands they can think of to out-kvlt each other, but there's a reason Deicide, Morbid Angel and Obituary are getting mentioned more than anything else.

Definately the first deicide LP, the fist Cbituary LP and the first Death LP. Also anything by Possessed, the first Athiest LP, the first 3 Bolt Thrower efforts, and without trying to be kvlt, get the first album by a polish band called Damnation (features members of behemoth, and is just brilliant!!!!). Loads more of course, but those few will keep you busy for a while!!

Dunno if its been mentioned but a few of the Roadrunner "Two from the Vault" cds are usually worth picking up. I have all of the series DM wise you can pick up 2 classic albums for the price of one, the series includes Obituary (2cds),Suffocation,Pestilence and erm Gorguts if that takes your fancy.

You can go wrong with the Swedes Unleashed/Grave/Dismember are good solid start to.

Immolation (Old School DM Daddies) and Incantation (Ownwards to Golgtha is a must)

If you wanna go for more underground try Dead Congregation maybe?

More thrashy try stuff like Destroyer666 etc

Obituary - Slowly We Rot (for me, maybe the #1 death metal album ever)
Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness, Blessed Are The Sick
Deicide - Deicide
Massacre - From Beyond
Death - Spiritual Healing
Entombed - Left Hand Path, Clandestine
Atheist - Piece Of Time
Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding
Comecon - Megatrends In Brutality (with LG Petrov from Entombed on vocals when he'd been kicked out of the band temporarily)
Morgoth - Cursed
Dismember - Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Unleashed - Where No Life Dwells
Napalm Death - Harmony Corruption
Carcass - Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious

I could also recommend bands like Autopsy, but they're a bit harder to listen to. I'd listen to the above bands first.
