Drop D

Postby origamikid on Tue Jan 13, 2009 3:03 am

Hey,

Was just messing around with Drop D (after really getting into some onslaught and thinking..god dam why arnt in in drop d..)

and its quite cool and i am enjoying the brutal sound...however... powerchords...

Alot of the powerchords or whatever that would play in standard sound like shit in Drop D (obv) so is thier anyway to move them over?

Wouldnt mind givin drop D a proper try but i wouldnt mind moving some of the songs that ive already got written over to the different tuning...or is this not possible?

Thanks

I always tune to standard D instead of drop D, So the low string to high is D, G, C, F, A, D. That way, you can still play standard powerchords, but you can still do the 'backwards powerchords' and the 'slayer 1 finger power chord'.

Personally I'm not a giant fan of drop tunings, but they are heavy. Good for playing chuggy riffs, but good for making gay nu-metal...

Depends what you're using it for really. Could do good things with drop tunings.

Im using it for thrash mmmeeetttallll dan.

Well i will try it out. The E string is incredibly chuggy and agressive d-tuned...so il try shit out

Dude, just fuckin put your finger across the lowest 3 strings, that's how to play in drop D, that's a power chord.

then when there's an A chord (577 on the e-string or 022 on the a string), since you're lowest note is a whole note lower, the A chord would become a G, so play 555.... simple stuff really, just gotta remember the lowest string is 2 frets lower than usual, so either shift the notes on that string up 2, or shift all the other notes down 2

try songs like 'no good' and 'primal concrete sledge' by pantera, they're good in drop d, also, Jeff Buckley

tuner? for drop D?

you got a floating trem or fixed bridge? tuning down to drop d should be easy, just play the E and D strings at the same and tune down the E until it sounds the same as the D string. (you should hear the sound almost 'phase' when you're tuning down, when the phasing slows down, you're almost at D) :)

Different tunings are great because they allow you to get a really different sound without changing your playing style or leaving your 'box'.

Powerchords are just the lowest 2 or 3 strings barred.

Try tuning to CGCGGC, it's fucking awesome.

People say that a lot but... you can write technical riffs in drop tunings that you cant play in a standard tuning.

Well Zurab, dont think youll find bands like Carcass tuned up that high. B standard!

Each tuning can be great as long as you can write good music in it. Theres no real "shit" tunings.
