Oh you absolutely should, no doubt at all.

1) Massively important literary achievement.
2) I think it's important to "know what all the fuss is about". Very important indeed - you have no grounds for questioning the meanings Christians get out of it unless you read it yourself. That's not to say you cant criticize religion without having read it, but it certainly helps to know what exactly it is that so many people are basing their lives (and supposedly their morals) upon.

and 3) in doing so you'll achieve more than a lot of Christians seem to have actually done - I spoke to a Christian a few days ago who hasn't even read the whole New Testament!

Exactamundo!!!

Have you read it James?

Also... is there like a 'Lite' version of the bible that's got less pages and not worded like it was written by Yoda? That might be a better starting place for me as I don't think I could handle the full might of that beastly religious text!!!

I second that, it's like reading a foreign language. They should make a ghetto bible also.

Yes. New Testament anyway: I really need to read the Old Testament sometime soon, particularly to grasp for myself the basic for the "prophecies" Jesus supposedly fulfilled.

There are loads of very modern translations. The New International Version is extremely accessible, and is always handed out for free by groups like the Gideons (New Testament at least).

Wanting a light version with less pages kind of misses the point (although a cynic could claim that the modern bible is already a 'light' edition, given all the documents which didn't make the final cut!!) - it's actually very easy to get through if it's one of these newer translations. Each individual gospel (Matt, Mark, Luke, John) is not particularly long, and you can easily read a few chapters at a time.

Sorry to drag up an old thread. But I was chit-chatting away at a party the other night about free will and the like.

My friend is of the opinion that for free will to exist, you have to believe in some sort of God.

Because if you have absolute faith in science, you'd know that all process and events can theoretically be turned into an equation of some sort. Because of that, you can theoretically place every single molecule/atom into a scientific equation in relation to every other single molecule/atom. Therefore, it becomes possible to theoretically predict the future. However, if you can predict the future this way, it means that there is no free will because the future is already determined.

Meanwhile elsewhere at the party, people were stealing shit and doing what drunk people are meant to do.

For the record, I'm atheist and Buddhist.

Discuss.

Never! I dunno, just find it tough to believe that there is no god, get believe in spiritual "energy" and all that.
