King Crimson are the definitive prog band, and the ultimate lesson is prog amazingness. Get all their albums and cry every day.

Rush are better than King Crimson, thanks.

Absolutely not. No way. Rush are very good, but King Crimson are one of the most innovative, important and unbelievable bands you could ever imagine

Yeah but if we're all honest with ourselves we know King Crimmy are the better loan managers.

I really like Rush, definitely a good place to start for prog I think as they have more of a rock/heavy metal sound on the early albums. I will admit I'm a bit of a prog n00b but I still like some bands and have a few LPs and CDs by bands like Yes, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, Rush, Hawkwind, Camel, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Genesis (before they went shit) which are all pretty cool.

However I have started looking into more obscure prog which I hope to look into more. Always has a lot of imagination behind it I think, using stuff like sci-fi and fantasy which is a plus, such as Hawkwind for example basing songs around Michael Moorcock's Elric books.

And James, I suggest you start with Close to the Edge and the first album by Yes (whose name escapes me right now but its been mentioned on this thread, I think its called Focus or something like that...) They went a bit up their own arse a bit later apparently, but so you know where to start just check out www.progarchives.com.
