Can I just mention that I'm still not an Obituary fan - however many times I listen to SLowly We Rot and Cause of Death, I just can't see what's so good about them.
I really want to appreciate it, because it seems like they were an important band in an innovative sense, but I just find their songwriting really boring, and the riffs tend to lack the interest of thrash riffs.
I feel that the early Swedish bands achieve a lot more than Obituary in the field of stripped down dirty death metal.
Really sorry, I just can't get into Obi! believe me I've tried
Deicide or Cannibal Corpse?

How dare you!
Just check out these amazing riffs pleeeaaase!
Slowly We Rot:
Till Death - 1:23.
Suffocation - Intro riff and verse riff (ok and the rest of the song).
Deadly Intentions - Intro riff.
Intoxicated - 0:39 How cool is that! "Weeeaaal!"
Cause Of Death:
Chopped in half - Intro (and rest of song).
Dying - That whole awesome intro section and 2:28.
Turned Inside Out - The intro and 1:38, the greatest riff ever written.
Ok these are only a few of Obituarys (killer) riffs but listen to how fanny-tit-stick they are!

On topic, this month's Terrorizer has a decent Deicide article (as well as the whole Death Metal Special feature).
I don't buy Terrorizer normally, but I thought the DM article sounded ok...and then I saw the Morbid Angel centrefold poster and that swung it for me!
The Deicide interview is good, they reveal that one of their new guitarists is actually a Catholic and also claim that Eric Hoffman got a friend to write his leads for him, and paid him for it!

Cannibal corpse lyrics rule, and their riffs are amazing. Its all about the fact that the drummer never does drum rolls either. And Alex Webster > Glen Benton at bass. Not sure if the fact that Glen Benton was literally begging for drugs before a gig in London counts in their favour or against really...
Also, from skin to liquid, hammer smashed face, pounded into dust, all that stuff is wicked, even the later albums were still top notch. Having said that, i thought Deicides latest was amazing, especially Homage to Satan, whichever one had the clean intro.

Tough call but Deicide for me - just. I got into them first and love Benton's vocals. Both bands suffer from one dimensionality - Cannibal Corspe like corpses and Deicide don't invite Jesus around for biscuits - but Benton's voice gives Deicide the edge for me.
I love Eaten Back to Life and The Bleeding by CC though.

Would Sir care for the house speciality, Entrails Ripped from a Virgin's Cunt, instead?

I met Alex Webster about ten years ago and we had a damn good chat about all things Webster.
