I'm not sure myself.
It means the same thing as crap but sounds far stronger. It first appeard on UK Thrash when Jekazol took offence to Macho from Amok terming their music as 'gant'. It sort of sounds like it could be an amalgamation of 'cunt' and 'gash'.
One thing's for sure, it truly is a fantastic word. We need words like this to rejuvenate swearing.
