I was a bassist way before I was into metal of any description. Took lessons at school for about 4 years, gave up because they weren't teaching me the stuff I wanted to play.
Learnt The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Running Free and The Ides Of March (plus some of Wrathchild) through TAB, have since tried to do everything by ear (for most metal tracks I ususally start off playing the usual E / C / G / D progression, then just transpose it up/down the neck ).
I suppose the guy who really inspires me is Steve Harris, I remember listening to Murders In The Rue Morgue and thinking "This is what I want to play". The riffs, fills and technique were spot on. I still can't play the fecker lol.

That would be stuff like Maiden, and the solos from stuff like 2 Minutes to Midnight and the solo from Pantera-Domination. Plus all the classic thrash riffage you've all heard.

i started playing drums as soon as i heard my first metal album, kill em all. the reason i started playing guitar was because i wanted to form a thrash band and i didnt know any guitarist who wrote thrash riffs, so i just fuckin learned it and descided to stick with it rather than go back to skin bashing.

Duff McKagan from Guns 'N' Roses got me into playing bass, probably songs like 'Locomotive' and 'Rocket Queen', just awesome tone. Him and I guess Flea were the guys who made me want to pick up the instrument to begin with.
'Dawn Patrol' by Megadeth, a lot of the stuff on 'Rust In Peace, got me into it even further. Then listening to 'Kill 'Em All' made me want to pursue it in different ways, take it to the next level.

Listening to Guns N' Roses, Deep Purple, Extreme and Iron Maiden from when I was young helped me into wanting to learn a musical instrument.
When I first heard Metallica's "Orion", the middle bass part made me cream. So I chose to learn that. Also I say the Bass/Guitar Doodle on Metallica's Cunning Stunts DVD encouraged me into sticking with it and forever practising.

Cliff Burton, but Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth) and For Whom The Bell Tolls in particular, is what made me want to play bass because it was the first time I'd heard a bass being used for a solo

Can't really think of a specific song, maybe AJFA. Was on far too many drugs at the time to remember.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Ha ha!
Well, back in the early 90's, still being a kid n all, the only music that I'd ever heard in my life was whatever was on those 'Now 27' tapes!
Didn't really have any access to music at that stage of my life (altho Blur were beginning to get quite cool) so I was relying heavily on whatever was on these tapes! One day, I was listening to a new tape someone lent me, I heard such a mean guitar riff as an intro! then drums! then some twat about it saying 'steam'.
East 17 - Steam, was the song, that got me into guitar playing. But moreso, East 17, are indirectly the band that got me into metal!
