Oh god. I wont do what Jamie and Jon have just done because no-one wants to read it.
Basically prog is the fuck. As well as what has been mentioned, Emerson Lake and Palmer really need noting. To many, their style epitomises what prog rock is. Very over the top, very self indulgent, very wank, very amazing. Their half hour(!) track Karn Evil 9 is really out of this world. One of those songs where you'll listen to it and lose half an hour by mistake. You also may recognise it as it was used in the intro theme to Jim Davidson's generation game! "Welcome back my friend, to the show that never ends..." etc.
But yes, I'll have a stab at a top 10 as well then:
Beefheart - Trout Mask (untouchable by anything)
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Comus - First Utterance
King Crimson - Larks Tongue in Aspic (you'd better believe it)
Caravan - In the Land of Grey and Pink
Frank Zappa - Hot Rats
Camel - Snow Goose
ELP - Brain Salad Surgery
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Robert Wyatt - Rock Bottom
(I've restricted it to only one per band, otherwise it would probably only consist of Beefheart, Tull and Crimson)
Prog Rock

you mean De-loused in the Comatorium
Shit, I'm a n00b! I didn't even read the title of the album properly, good lord! ANyway, I've corrected my error. I've also decided that Porcupine Tree album that I bought, Deadwing, is absolutely fucking bloody amazing, and I have now inserted it into my Top 10. For those who can't be bothered to look back a page, here it is again in no particular order apart from Tool as they're the best (I know you all care so much and really want to see it).
Tool - 10,000 Days
Tool - Lateralus
Opeth - Ghost Reveries
King Crimson - Red
Jethro Tull - Thick As A Brick
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Mars Volta - De-loused In The Comatorium
Fovea Hex - Neither Speak Nor Remain Silent (not really rock, but still prog!)
King Crimson - In The Court of the Crimson King
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing

The S/T debut, or for out and out face melt try Starless And Bible Black Sabbath. Though not strictly prog as such, it is a shinig example of the sub genre space rock.

What is a prog-hardcore band? Any examples- is this like Isis or have I got it wrong entirely?
Um, I guess you could call Isis prog hardcore, but I'm not sure. The only prog hardcore bands I can think of are quite obscure / underated. If I had to name some I would say motive, atlas shrugged and iceburn (Only their early stuff, now they're a prog - jazz band or something!). check them out on myspace if you want

I really like Van Der Graaf Generator and a bit of King Crimson.
Also try some of the German stuff (Krautrock), Can, Faust, Neu, etc.
Massive Beefheart fan but certainly wouldn't class it as Prog in the same vein of anything so far mentioned.
Highlights for me are
VDGG - The least we can do is wave to each other
KC - Larks tongues in Aspic
Can - Ege Bamyasi (Okraschoten)
Faust - So Faust
If you fancy a bit of Beefheart I feel it's easier to break yourself in on the simpler stuff than straight to Trout Mask or Lick my decals off baby.

So glad to see there are some GY!BE fans on here, they are my all time favourite band. yes i would say they are prog because they are very progressive musically and they steal alot of stuff from king crimson (in the best possible way!). but yes their actual genre is Post-Rock, of which there are some other great bands. anyway well done godspeed you! black emeporer, you are the best!
i don't know what to say my head is too full of wonderful prog things! Larks tounge, very nice.
Hawkwind - awsome!
Prog Hardcore - i have heard some, and of course stufff like Isis which is more "post-hardcore / ambient" apparently! great great great
erm anything else?......

After having not listened to it in ages, I put on that Godspeed album last night, 'Yanqui uxo' or something or other, and it's definitely very amazing indeed. There's a bit in track 3 (the best track in the world unbelievable!) which sounds like The Godfather soundtrack (the scary death-is-about-to-occur music) and it's great! What I love most about it is how atmospheric it is, like Fovea Hex too, you listen to it and it makes you feel like you're in another world. Sounds cheesy I know when you put it like that, but it's true, it's bloody amazing!

I can't be bothered with God Speed. They seem to just produce atmospheric 'music'. I want real music for goods sake. I'll bring Camel to Keele Jon, I'm sure you'll enjoy.

The snow goose is a wicked album, I listen to this constantly. And Rain Dances is another wicked Camel album.
The Mars Volta - Amputechture another wicked album.
Opeth - Blackwater Park.
Of course King Crimson (court of the crimson king) and Pink Floyd (wish you were here)
I've been told that early Genesis (foxtrot?) is worth a listen.
Rick Wakeman anyone? Journey to the centre of the earth and knights of the round table (or words to that effect)
and Yes.
Now just Nick
