I have long hair because I like how it looks, not because I feel it's required. It helps for the stage show. If you're in Heretic it's not really needed because the stage show is not emphasised.
I never really got on with this mentality a lot of people have where just going on stage in normal clothes is encouraged. Metal subculture, for better or for worse, recognises a certain fashion as part of it's collective soul. I find engaging in that fashion whilst on stage or around the metal environment helps but it's just a personal thing and definitely depends on how you want to be perceived.
I prefer the full-show approach - when I get on stage I'm there to entertain visually and aurally. If someone wanted to listen to my music then they can buy a fucking cd. Live shows are something else entirely. I know I'd rather go watch Rammstein than say, Megadeth. Even though Megadeth musically are a very good band, Rammstein's live show would entertain me more.
For Heretic, their approach works for what they are doing. They don't want or need theatrics.
People who dress up all metal in their everyday lives are pretty silly if you ask me. Keeping some signs to show what you're into is ok.. but I find having the long hair does that well enough for me.
White t-shirt and regular jeans works fine for me.
