NEC

THE SWORD
Dreadful sound masked a very good set. Vocals virtually inaudible from where I was stood (about 8 rows of people from the front). A couple of other people noticed too.

MACHINE HEAD
The sound was so utterly diabolical I could barely make out what they were playing at some points. A garbled mess with no distinct sounds other than pinch harmonics and high notes during the solos. Vocals tinny and echoey, bass overpowering both guitars and drums clanking away like Lars on St. Anger.
This time lots of people were commenting about the crap sound. My first experience of a gig "in the round" was fast going down the shitter.

METALLICA
Praise the lord, it's a miracle! 100% Perfect sound from the moment the first chord was struck to the very last.
What a strange coincidence...
Ignoring the seemngly obvious that once again Metallica sabotaged their supports' sound, they redeemed themselves by playing the proverbial blinder. A flawless display of showmanship and confidence.
They concentrated heavily, as I expected, on the new album. This suited me down to the ground as I've seen them five times previous to this and heard them play virtually every song I could want them to. No doubt a lot of the first timers went home a bit miffed. My mate was disappointed they didn't play For Whom the Bell Tolls for starters.
The strangest omission was Cyanide, I'd have thought that was an absolute shoo-in to be aired. But no, they decided to play My Apocalypse for the first time (according to James anyway). Not a bad replacement I suppose.
