Great topic. It all goes down to what the band members want in their lives though it should be in line with what they can do. Normally bands that are DIY and work their arses off get recognition and signed anyway as that's what labels want and the groundwork is laid. People that release a demo, do nothing and wait for a man in a suit to turn up at a gig with money for them will be waiting until they are old and grey.

The catalyst to make our music free was that we were supporting a popuar signed band (no names out of respect) in Manchester and they told us how much they made as a band per CD sold. The fact is that ALL bands will end and you have to have a trade to fall back on, why not work for a living and fund it yourself?

Y'know, they couldn't do what I'm doing and I couldn't do what they're.. actually I could. And I think they knew that.. even back then.

Haha! Random! No names but I can tell you they made £2 per CD. Divde that between 5 members and times it by how many records you think your album can sell then decide if you should quit your job.

The fact of the matter is that 97%+ of bands won't get signed anyway so why not just enjoy it for what it is? We spent 10 years looking for recognition off a label in other bands we were in (Pre-internet) and it sours your pride and dents friendships with other members. Every big band has split over money at some point too and you have to ask yourself would you want to fall out with your mates over the scraps off a record companys table.
