Let's have a general discussion about the greatness and richness of this style/period of music!
I made a small NWOBHM compilation this evening, just to collect a few of my favourite tracks into a nice little listening session.
Here it is:

Saxon - And the Bands Played On
Cloven Hoof - Cloven Hoof
Holocaust - Heavy Metal Mania
Iron Maiden - Purgatory
Witchfinder General - Requiem For Youth
Witchfynde - The Divine Victim
Pagan Altar - The Lords of Hypocrisy
Diamond Head - The Prince
Angel Witch - White Witch
There is so much to explore in this genre, so many great atmospheres and distinctive bands. Maiden, Saxon and co are classics, but it goes way beyond that and it's great to discover some more. I would have added some others, like Demon, but some I only have on vinyl.
Hurrah for British metal!

That S/T Cloven Hoof track is easily one of the best NWOBHM tracks I've ever heard.

James, do you reckon you could make a bigger compilation? It's a genre i really want to dig deeper into and dont know where to start!

You need this book "The NWOBHM Encyclopedia" by Malc Macmillan (Iron Pages) ISBN 3-931624-16-1 and a few months on Soulseek.

Iron Maiden and Saxon played a big part in me growing up. Always on in the car, in the garage etc. NWOBHM is a brilliant genre but I've never looked far into it. I've just kind of stuck with what's obvious. Anybody recommend any lesser-known NWOBHM bands?
And did anyone else see Saxon at Wacken?

I have a Demon album on LP, the one where the bloke is playing a Strat in a ruined city.
I love NWOBHM but going by that release Demon sound like an awful attempt at hair metal.

I used to listen to and enjoy the odd bit of stuff like samson, demon, AIIZ, paralex, spider etc when i was younger, and i also used to love Geddes axe
However, a lot of NWOBHM is frankly shite, and because of this, i'd imagine a lot of good but obscure stuff got missed, very much like black metal at the moment.

There's always the mighty Budgie.
But as they're Welsh they shouldn't really be included.
And yes, I know Welsh is covered by the term British. But they're Welsh which should exclude them from most things.
Spider were class too. I saw them support Saxon a couple of times and they had their own touring stripper for their stage show
Oh, and not forgetting Tygers Of Pan Tang, and Quartz, and VENOM!!!!
The list goes on, a big chunk of my formative years were spent listening to NWOBHM bands.
