Re: Overkill Killfest Tour 2010
OVERKILL,
Wolves Civic Bar.
Firstly, I've got to say how poor the turnout was, especially for a band like Overkill who don't get over here very often. Only two dates in the country and the venue had to be shifted to a function room at the end of the Civic Hall that I didn't even know existed until the day of the gig.
SAVAGE MESSIAH
Missed them but everyone I spoke to seemed to think they were worth keeping an eye out for in the future.
CRIPPER
Obvious comparison to Arch Enemy aside (snarling female singer), they weren't a bad bunch of thrashers, just generally derivative and lacking any originality. Decent musicians, just not memorable music.
SUICIDAL SEPULSLAYER
Sorry...
SUICIDAL ANGELS.
Easy mistake.
Enthusiasm is definitely not lacking with this bunch, unfortunately, as was the case with Cripper, any sense of originality was. Take a riff from Slayer and add it to another couple by Sepultura and Kreator and you've got Suicidal Angels. The one guitarist sounded like he'd been taught solos by Jeff Hanneman and the vocalist was pure Max Cavalera. Not a bad band, just not an awesome one.
OVERKILL.
Have Overkill ever played a bad show? If they have then I need proof because I just don't believe it. They were so fucking metal they even broke Wolverhampton, sending the room into darkness with a power surge near the end that delayed the end of the show by ten/fifteen minutes.
The old songs sounded fresh and the new songs sat alongside them perfectly, like they'd been part of the show for years.
In no particular order, highlights included In Union We Stand, Hello From the Gutter, Elimination, Bring me the Night, Overkill, Fuck You, The Green and Black, Sonic Reducer, Ironbound, Rotten to the Core, Feel the Fire, Gasoline Dream and Old School. Even Necroshine, which I must admit isn't one of my favourite tracks, sounded fantastic. They played a few more but it became a bit of a blur in places such was the intensity of the small but rabid crowd, battering me from all angles.
Considering there must have been some disappointment for the band, having to move the show to the confines of a much smaller room, you'd never have noticed it for a second. Blitz was as energetic and possessed as ever (even if it took him a few goes to get onto the stage) and the rest of the band backed him up perfectly.
Fantastic night.
