media that made you cry...

Postby meluaz on Tue Sep 29, 2009 12:13 am

Had a nice chat on the shoutbox about films that made me cry, so what films/books/music genuinely make you lot cry and if not cry go all red eyed.

i could go on with my list, gladiators the ending is so powerful and sad, a lot of the scenes in the whole lord of the rings trilogy, the ending of A.I. literally made me lose all my body fluid...

I nearly cried at the end of The Silmarillion, after the final part summarising the War of the Ring... just something about how the Elves were leaving Middle Earth for ever, after having just read the whole epic history of their race. Hahaha, what a big girl.

I'm halfway through the Silmarillion, it's really epic man. I don't cry much but that scene in Buffy where Giles get home to find his girlfriend with her neck broken lying on the bed in a romantic setting that Angel has created...bad times. And obviously Shawshank.

Life On Mars? By David Bowie, because it reminds of an emotional time.

Not alot makes me cry, because I'm Dirty Harry and I've got a magnum, but, (and I know this isn't a film or anything) something I saw online a while back really fucked me up. Someone sent me an e-mail about the Chinese skin trade. It was a clip of some filthy fucking bastards skinning dogs alive. After pulling their skin off over their bodies, the dogs are still alive, skinless, just staring into the camera while still alive in their last few minutes. It's the most disturbing thing I've ever seen in my life. I even had nightmares about it. Fucking sick bastards.

Another thing that made me cry was at the end of Gran Torino. And even though I've seen it a million times, the last time I watched The Shawshank Redemption, I got a bit filled up at the end, with happy tears though, because the ending is so fucking awesome!! (I was drunk as fuck too so that played a big part)

The Silmarillion is far too good. Its a tough book to get into but its totally worth reading. Never made me cry though.

I'm a total sucker for a cry movie, most of the films directed by Eastwood have made me choke up at some point (especially Changeling). One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest both the book and the movie is impossible for me to get through without having a lonely weep.

The later books in the Dark Tower series, when it all starts to go wrong.

There are loads really, i'm a massive pussy it seems.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

Raging Bull really makes me feel like madness, in the prison scene, where De Niro is punching the wall in a very emotional way, it's bloody ridiculous. I remember the first time watching the film, it just came out of nowhere, I was just sitting there thinking, "Yes, I think this film is good, but what's going on here etc?" and then suddenly that happened and I felt like I wanted to cry my balls off. Then when the film finished (especially with the way it finished) I felt like I had been raped up the bum without even realising it. Then I realised it was the best film I had ever seen.

The Green Mile is another one, it was probably the first time I'd seen a film that had made me want to cry that much. Even now, it's absolutely ridiculous. Not even just the ending, there are quite a few moments throughout the film that make me want to kill myself, like the "Could that be what heaven's like?" moment, and the bit where they take Coffey to the boss man's house (can't remember his name) to cure his wife of the brain tumour. Christ alive! It's the music as well, probably the most emotional soundtrack I've ever heard.

Talking of emotional soundtracks, The Last Samurai is also amazing and one that nearly gave me a heart attack in the cinema, mainly in the bit where Katsumoto's son get's offed, the look on Katsumoto's face when he looks at his son for the last time literally makes me want to bawl my eyes out. And of course the end of the final battle, which is ridiculously emotional, good lord. Ken Watanabe is an absolutely amazing actor. The bit where Tom Cruise is going when he's first in the village screaming "SAKEEEE!! NOOOOOOOO!" just really makes me laugh though unfortunately.

And of course the LOTR trilogy, goodness me. Everything in that film made me want to cry my face off, although some of it has become hilarious with time, but a lot of it still has the ultimate power. The bit where Gandalf falls off the bridge of Khazad-dum, christ, when I first saw that I had no idea that Gandalf was coming back in the next one, so I don't think I've ever been more upset in my life. The most amazing thing in that scene, apart from the music, is the shot when they come outside of the mountain, it's the most beautiful thing ever, and it's bloody unbelievable, and everyone's crying everywhere, good lord. And when Boromir dies, fucking hell, how fucking amazing is that line, "I would've followed you my brother... my captain... my king." It's giving me shivers thinking about it now. Absolutely amazing. And the whole of ROTK is just madness.

As Billy already mentioned, Clint Eastwood is a master of making people cry, Million Dollar Baby and Changeling in particular being unbelievable. Gran Torino is also amazing. The man is an absolute legend.

Also, anyone seen Finding Neverland? Now, that is one emotional film. Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp are amazing in that film, and even though the children's acting skills are questionable (though Freddy Highmore is really good), it still makes me want to cry so very very much.

And finally, Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid 4. The two best games in the world ever, both almost had me weeping on many occasions. Especially MGS4, there are so many things in the last two acts that just melted my brain and made me want to weep my face off. Solid Snake is the best character in any game or film or book EVER.

Oh yeah and Schindler's List, Hotel Rwanda and Munich too, but I guess that's a given.

Agreed, amazing bit of cinema!

And when Boromir dies, fucking hell, how fucking amazing is that line, "I would've followed you my brother... my captain... my king." It's giving me shivers thinking about it now. Absolutely amazing.

But I have to say for me that line is a bit corny and predictable. His death itself is a sad moment though of course. I also like that bit where Gandalf is describing Valinor to Pippin during the siege of Minas Tirith, that's quite sad and lovely. Ian McKellan rules!

But for me the saddest moment of all is the final departure at the Grey Havens - I always choke up a bit at that scene. Partly because it's the end of the epic journey the film trilogy has taken the viewer on, partly because Gandalf (in my opinion the most important character, alongside Sam) is leaving forever and he will never be there to rely on again, and partly for the same reason I mentioned regarding the Silmarillion; it marks the departure of the Three Rings and the sunset of Elven power east of the Sea, completing their millenia-spanning story and seeing them finally return to the Undying Lands they've been sundered from for so long. And then there's obviously the severance between Frodo and his friends, albeit stained indelibly by that horrendous smirk!

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The Killer,Bullet In The Head(just bloody see it John!!! ) and A Better Tomorrow.

all 3 written and directed by John Woo.forget his hollywood stuff(although some of those are decent ie:face off)
its his 3 hong kong gangster masterpieces i mention above which had me shedding tears multiple times throughout each movie.
the soundtracks, acting and compelling believable realistic plotlines.although the gunfights are a little OTT(hong kong being the home of beautiful action choreograhy)they are still believable when the victims get hit.

Hard Boiled by John Woo wasnt as emotional but still had some tragic moments.also it had a 5minute or so gun scene all in one take filmed from behind Chow Yun Fat in a hospital shootout.it deserves shitloads of awards for that scene alone coz it must have taken ages rehearsing and loads of takes to get it right.

Carlitos Way gets me every time no matter how many times i watch it.Pacino's finest hour in my opinion.thousands better than Scarface which is overhyped.funnily enough Brian De Palma directed both but Carlitos Way is just too brilliant.the ending/credits is just genius how the black and white turns to colur on the billboard Pacino looks at as he fades in and out of death,it springs to life with color to represent his wife and future child happy and dancing on a paradise island, but without him as he was a gangster tryna go straight and do the right thing but didnt manage to escape his past.he gets shot whilst trying to board a train to a better life, with a wad of cash and his pregnant woman.

the Scorsese/De Niro collaborations ie:Casino,Goodfellastaxi Driver and Raging Bull are all pretty powerful films too.

i cried when arnie gets lowered into the lava on T2.(i was about 6 or 7).its still pretty sad now but rather corny with the thumbs up in hindsight.

my mate said he cried at Forrest Gump.i laughed at him but then after re watching it one night on tv,when i was a bit older,i realised it is pretty damn sad in parts.

my brother got upset over Men Of Honor.

also i agree with John FF7 is sad when Aeris/Aerith dies.cant believe i shed tears at a video game and i must have been in year 10 or 11. :D although everyone at school wouldnt admit to it when it was the coolest thing everyone was playing.
Terranigma on snes is pretty compelling too.

music wise i think some Tupac and Marvin Gaye songs can get the odd tear flowing depending what mood im in.its hard being black sometimes.(according to these artists)

oh yeah....war films.platoon, casualties of war, full metal jacket all leave me struggling not to sob.

P.S.bloody 10 out of 10 to Zurab for one of the most interesting threads in a while.
