Raging Paul wrote:What!?! Pantera are wicked! When you talk about all the people who 'latch onto' the whole him dying thing I think you miss the point. He was a legend when he was alive, because he was so fucking amazing at guitar and because his band RULED (before it split up). When he died, all the people who loved Pantera made a big deal about it. Also, a bunch of people who didnt really know about Pantera listened to them to see what the fuss was about.

The fact that loads of crap bands try hopelessly to imitate their awesomeness is no reason to slag them off.

Also whoever said that saying Pantera kept metal going was like saying Slipknot kept metal going, what's your point? Any heavy metal band that gets people into heavy metal and makes them drag themselves out to go and see gigs is keeping metal going. And Pantera did that in a BIG way, whilst also helping bands along the way (I remember seeing Satyricon supporting Pantera at Phil's request when barely anyone knew who they were, and then what was the big metal scene of the 90's? Black metal.) AND they gave a shout out to the bands that influenced them (Black Sabbath and Slayer are mentioned in their last album).

So anyway, they were metal, they were awesome, and if you're just having a whinge about Darrell's guitar tone then you've lost me completely; it was amazing!?!?

Good call.

Tone's tone, I've never got all the hype about tone. Everyone goes on about the Edge's amazing tone, that doesn't make him good, that makes Gibson, Vox and Boss good.
I'm going to
Tear your fuckin' eyes out,
Rip your fuckin' flesh off,
Beat you 'till you're just a fucking lifeless carcass,
Fuck you and your progress,
Watch me fucking regress,
You were made to take the fall,
Now you're nothing!!

Ok, I initially started this thread so people could pay a little respect to a guy who died and whom some would consider a major influence or hero, not for people to come slag him off. If you want to do that, feel free to start a new thread about it, but that's not what this one was meant for. At the moment you're basically the same as the guy who spends all day going on the Slipknot forum and posting "Slipknot sucks" on all the threads. You know full well that acting like that is just going to piss people off, and that's hardly the point of this forum, now is it? As a metaller I accepted a long time ago that other people were not always going to share my views, and I'm happy with that. Had I thought that I was in a minority with being a fan of Dimebag, I wouldn't have bothered. I actually genuinely thought that most people on this forum were fans of Dime and Pantera, and would enjoy this thread.

And for the record, you don't have to be the most technically brilliant or original player in the world to be a great guitarist. All it takes is to make people sit up and listen. There are thousands of guitarists that first picked up a guitar because of Dime, and that's pretty fuckin ace.

 thats the classic, 'im above this argument because i've got a social life' ploy

on a serious note, i apologise for my initial post in this thread as it was pretty lame.

i guess im just sick of getting Dimebag and Pantera shoved down my throat by the metal community in general when i'm not really interested

Kind of like the Maddie thing. Once it had been on the front page for the 20th time it started to lose its seriousness and just became ridiculous.

I stick by my opinions on Pantera's music but i'll save it for another day

When the metal scene (especially thrash) was dying hideously on it's arse in the early 90s, Pantera helped slap new life into it.
Whether you view them as saviours of metal or just Exhorder copyists, the fact remains that they gave metal a well needed kick up the backside in direct reply to the grunge and "alternative" scenes.

That boy could shred like a motherfucker.

Yeah, RIP Dime and all that... for the sake of being courteous, it was sad he died because of some insane 'fan'.

I agree with some of the points in this thread though, the whole 'gonna kick your ass 'cause I'm a badboy' metal genre that has arisen partly through Pantera is quite embarrassing...

I do think Dime was a decent guitar player, and deserves respect but lets face it as good as he was there are much better out there, he's only hero worshiped so much these days because he was murdered, I doubt he'd be too impressed that he's now become a bit of a brand for bands like 'Avenged Sevenfold' to plaster about. Hmm, I don't know. My main thing against Pantera is Phil Anselmo's whole 'yeah I'm so brutal I'll kick your face in, I shave my head with a meat cleaver' attitude, what a wang.

I'm not the biggest Pantera fan, but seriously, let the guy rest in peace. He was still a talented and influential guitarist who had his life taken too soon.

Fair game mate. Sorry if this has been done too many times. I wasn't here last year so I don't know if the same thing happened on the board then, I imagine it probably did. Didn't mean to shove it down anyone's throat, but in my defence, I didn't make anyone open the thread and read it. To be honest it's more Lev that's pissing me off by acting like a four year old and failing to actually construct a valid argument.

Interesting points. Here we go:

Phil is indeed a cockbag. He's a racist, bigoted drug-addict.
Dimebag was a great guitarist indeed. I also thought a lot of the riffs he made were awesome. Strange how everyone knows Walk and I'd consider that one of the most boring songs/riffs that Pantera ever played.
I don't think there has been a saturation of Phil's death in the music media. But then I don't really read many mags apart from the odd terrorizer and I flick through K!s in shops to piss myself off.
I personally owed a lot to Pantera. While I don't think that much of their music anymore, they were key to developing my musical taste. Also the Slipknot comparison is bollcks. Put CFH in context and then do the same with Slipknot's debut and you can see that Pantera were key for 90s metal in many ways and Slipknot were not. That being said I do think that Slipknot were quite important of adding an extreme element to Metal at a point it had become shit. Still a pretty crappy band.
To shit on a person many people respect on the anniversary of their death is the action of a cunt. I'm not annoyed about it, but I'm hardly impressed with it either.

Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
