Which band does the best covers, live or on record?

I like Destruction's version of The Damned by The Plasmatics and Minor Threat's version of Steppin' Stone (who is that by, anyone?).

What do you dig?

W.A.S.P.!

Their covers of Paint It Black and Somebody To Love are both brilliant choices of covers and, IMO, top both of the originals. Two of my favourite covers.

I'm not usually too keen on Thrash bands covering songs because applying Thrash to songs that weren't originally Thrash is quite hard to pull off.

The only cover song I've really been impressed with was Dispatched doing "The Final Countdown". Fucking amazing! :rockdevil:

Well I feel that any band that will attempt 2 CDs of covers deserve repsect in my book.

Holy Mother do wicked covers also (Holy Diver "Dio" & Rebel Yell "Billy Idol" & even Your Song "Elton John".

The best cover I've ever heard has to be Tool's version of 'No Quarter'. Never before have I heard a band cover a Led Zeppelin song and not only make it sound better, but make the whole thing a bloody billion times more amazing than you could ever believe! They even have the audacity to slightly change the lyrics, make certain bits longer, add completely new sections and a completely new ending, and generally slow the whole thing down a bit and make the whole song about 4 minutes longer, clocking in at around 11 minutes. It's absolutely unbelievable. They make it into such a powerful epic, you could never imagine the original track, which is still very good, sounding like this. It's available on their 'Salival' album type thing, anyone who's remotely interested in Tool should invest in it immediately, there are some amazing live tracks on there too, and a humorous bonus track called 'Maynard's Dick'. Great stuff.

For humorous covers, Megadeth's version of 'These Boots' form Killing Is My Business is great stuff. Blind Guardian doing the Beach Boys' 'Barbara Ann' is also quite hilarious. Imagine that why don't you.

Napalm Death. Brilliant covers. Half the covers are better than the originals.

There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

Their cover of Lowlife is my favourite, especially when Mitch sings the choruses.
