So being off Uni now i have been able to do lots of reading and watching movies (in between working).
I have been watching loads of old horror movies....like Dracula, dr jekyll and mr hyde, Phantom of the opera, Vampyr, cabinet of dr. caligari and Frankenstein etc...while more eerie than scary in this day and age i think these movies are great.
Anyone else enjoy these classic movies and have any suggestions for any others i should check out?

I've always been interested in seeing the classic ones by Boris Karloff or whoever directed them. Are they shit or what?

They are very of their time but James Whale did a great job directing and the classic films are usually around an hour long yet they don't feel rushed were nowadays horror movies run too long with really crappy jump scares instead of an actual eerie atmosphere.

I've generally avoided Horror Films since watching Horror Express aged 10, nigh on shitting my pants. I have seen a couple recently - none of the classics though. I remember my flat mates making me watch the Grudge of something and it was just shite.

Nosferatu is bloody amazing, but I can't say I've checked out any other proper old horror movies.
I'd like to though, horror movies these days are just awful and it would be good to see some more stuff that is genuinely eerie.

But...those films are old, and don't have giant explosions and inane pop culture references to amuse audiences.

Isn't this the genre Christopher Lee started out in? I'd quite like to check some out, I agree that atmosphere is a very rare thing in virtually ALL modern films (and music, come to think of it).

Thats a bit later, Christopher lee got big in the hammer movies which re-made all the ones i am watching in the late 50's and 60's, thing is they have their charm as well its a bit more exploitation with the tits and Ingrid pitt, where as in the 30's you don't even see Dracula touch people. Though one of the best films from that era was the Wickerman its sort of fish out of water crime story until the last 10 minutes were it goes mental

Imagine if The Shadow Over Innesmouth was made in to a film, and DONE WELL. That would be amazing.

Dagon done by Stuart Gordon (how did re-animater and from beyond) is more or less The Shadow Over Innsmouth story, terribly low budget for what it needed to be.
