Tredegar

Postby Plodman on Tue Jul 28, 2009 1:00 am

Anyone else know these guys? I've known about them for a bit but just got their album as i heard it has some ace numbers on it with a really different slant on the NWOBHM style. Also, they had Tony Bourge playing guitar on that album, he shreds it up a bit more than he did in budgie though, it's vastly different.
The track which way to go actually has russ north on guest vocals, though it's by far my least favourite track as i prefer the more epic sounding tracks with more energy in them.

Sounds quite interesting, wouldn't mind hearing it.

That would make sense since budgie are from wales!
Yeah i think they have a really unique sound, some of it is really mellow in places aswell, and some almost progressive (the alchemist in particular).

Thought the album was DDDDUUUULLLLLLL. I'd instead recommend Legend/Omega, Slander, Y Diawled, Wild Pussy or Robespierre for anyone after some interesting and unique NWOBHM type stuff.

I wish Rockadrome would hurry up with their re-release of the Legend Anthology!

Already have! Well 'Winter Kill' anyway. Some of the most weird heavy metal I've ever heard... enjoyable though!

Russ North sings all the songs on the Tredegar album. The album is nowhere near as good as they were live. However, it was self financed and released, with Tony Bourge having to remortgage his house to get it recorded. So, fair dues to him for that!

I must have seen them about 20+ times during the mid 80s. They were constantly touring, and I saw them with numerous singers, pre and post Russ North.

It was not only Tony Bourge from Budgie in the band, it also included original Budgie drummer Ray Phillips (one hell of a drummer actually). The band used to perform various Budgie tracks live - "Hot as a Docker's Armpit",
"Breadfan", "Zoom Club", "Napoleon Bona Pts. 1 & 2", "Baby, Please don't go".

Lots of great memories seeing those guys!

All of those above budgie songs are awesome-o

buuut...

It was actually Carl Sentence who did the vocals (except those lines on which way to go).
It's definately not his voice on the rest of the songs, less melodic and a different style altogether i'd say

Must say, never knew that (or, if I once did, I'd forgotten). I have loads of live boots with Russ North, from this period, and he sounds very close to the album takes, though the recording qualities are not A1 on most of those.

Didn't remember that Burke Shelley played bass on "Sabre Dance" either.

I always wondered what that female singers name was, when I saw them at the Marquee. Looks like it was Trixie Thorne.
