If you live in a multi cultural area like I do, you will see that you pretty much CAN'T be a racist. Not that I've tried! But seriously, you learn to respect people of different races.

Most racist people live in areas with few other races around to show them that its wrong. Rednecks, country villages, rural areas of Germany and Poland (which I have been to and seen gangs of Neo-Nazis). Had those people grown up around other cultures and without a misguided and old fashioned view, they would not be racist.

All you people living in weird villages in the north AND south probably find it very easy to spout racists bullshit while your a hundred miles away from London.

One of the problems with the 'north problem' is that the cities have become divided along religious lines thus no mixing between asians and black/white. It's not that different in London tbh, you just need to go to the poorer areas. This is the biggest failing of multiculturalism IMO. It has been afraid to tell people to learn English and mix with other races and allowed self ghettoisation.

Another important thing to realise is that we are all essentially born with a xenophobic outlook on life and it's only mixing with different people that grows your boundaries so as Tom says in London it's hard NOT to mix (in the affluent areas at least).

Yeah, there is problems like that, particulary in Bradford and unfortunately there's clearly people in poorer areas who don't want any of it, so prefer to be non-integrated and would rather live with tension than embrace it. The councils can try as much as they want to integrate, but people (probably on both sides) need to change their attitudes really and people need to stop blaming immigrant for every fucking thing, that's what really pisses me off.

Well, where i live there is a huuuuge Portugese population at the bottom of town. Yes, the council could try and integrate us, but at the end of the day, it wouldn't work, cause i fucking hate them.
Don't get me wrong, i'm not racist and yes, immigrants can come over if they want, get jobs etc etc. I also don't think its completely wrong of me to say that they should at least speak some sort of english either. But the people who live where i do DON'T have jobs, and the majority of them do not even speak English. That insanely pisses me off, and i wouldn't care if it wasn't for the fact that they just come over here and do fuck all. Obviously all immigrants don't, but the ones we have, do. I mean, i can't even go down the bottom of town anymore because it would just be hell, all the shops are portugese speaking and i would probably get beaten up for not being Portugese. It's basically ridiculous. Thats what really pisses me off.

Whilst that makes sense, I don't think that's particularly true - I know, and have encountered whilst working in the pub (as I'm sure you have), many a racist idiot, both old and young. They spout a lot of ignorant bollocks, despite living and having grown up in London and in schools with students from a variety of cultures. Sometimes I think it's just very angry and pissed off people who need something to be angry at, and find that being angry at someone because of their race or religion is an easy way to channel the anger. Also I guess it's obviously a lot to do with the way people are brought up, but saying that I have very different views on life to my parents, so that's not always true either. Basically, if you meet a nice person the chances are they're not a racist, and likewise a hostile and angry person will be, but not because they really are a racist - they're just generally very angry and that's one of the things they can be angry at. It's like in American History X where he says to his brother towards the end that he's tried of being pissed off all the time, and then tries to be a nice man after that.

You're right Jon. Your parent can reinforce the natural xenophobia of a child and it can evolve into racism. I was driving one of my daughters friends back to her house one day and they were chatting in the back on the car. They were probably about seven or eight. Anyway, out of the blue the friend said "I don't like black people, they all smell!".

Probability says she got this from her parents because:
- black people don't smell.
- my daughter said there are no black people with BO problems in the school that she knows of.
- she was too young to just come up with such a stereotypical absurdity.

Now here is where I disagree with you Jon: This little shits parents seemed quite nice. Looking back on some of the things they had said it started to become clear that they were just racist idiots. Now my kids are half Chinese so what do they think of my wife and (half of) my kids?

In some ways I respect the overt racists more because at least they are honest. It's the middle class stealth racists that make up the bulk of the voters.

Dazza seems to have his head in the right direction for this one. I've always been too interested in the world to neglect a race or culture and i don't bloody see the point of doing so either personally.

But i have encountered a lot of people who think otherwise, this whole recent "British Jobs for British Workers" fiasco is a prime example. These people must seriously have no idea that we are reliant on immigration to get the jobs done that themselves and their scummy kids feel are beneath them.

Somebody should really put realistic ambitions into a lot of these people, or just i don't know talk some factual sense into them.
