Singing Tips

Postby Atom on Wed Nov 29, 2006 6:20 pm

I was recording vocals the other day and found it quite painful as I hadn't sung in a while, are there any tips the vocalists on the board can give to make the life of the singer a little easier?

Cheers!

Before recording vocals on our E.P., Andy drank a can of Strongbow beforehand lol. Fuck knows why, but it did the trick..

Before the strongbow he sounded like Sean Killian on helium!

I probably get it worse than you (you'll see why when you hear the demo), so some of the things I try and do are...

A) Make sure my throats lubricated by drinking lots of water before, during and after the vocal takes.

B) Try and pronounce every word (sounds stupid, but it helps).

C) And just do a quick warm up. I have a CD with some warm-up exercises on and you only have to do them once in the whole day to warm your voice up.

like everyone said, make sure your throat isnt dry; also breathe from your diaphragm, sing even the higher notes from the bottom of your lungs, not only does that give you a stronger tone but it helps save your throat as well

Room temperature water, stay away from dairy products, do a low humming for about 5 minutes to warm your throat up

yeah thats very true. eating lots of cheese just before singing makes your thraot all gunged up.

for throat lubrication the best thing i have ever been suggested to use is Ribeena (or any blackcurrent juice). it creates some kind of natural film on your throat and so means you dont dry up that quickly. it certainly helps more than water, and if you are playing at a pub they will always have it behind the bar! great.

I find that beer does help. Maybe its a psychological thing. ('Beer!! Metall!! Lets goooooooo!!!!') Also, just do it more often. But hey, my singing style is more death than thrash, so I guess it only applies to my fellow cookie monsters.
