An interesting move, is this the sign of things to come, or a label continuing to 'experiment'? Does it make you want to investigate more... or less? Let's get some discussion going scumbags!

Hmmm it did make me want to investigate more, so I watched the video of Dave. Maybe I'll download the album too at some point.

The album's alright I guess, but for some reason I remember Savage Messiah being much better.

As for the free downloading thing, well... if people want to download an album for nothing and the band/label is fine with that, then why not? So long as they provide us with the option to buy the CD/vinyl then I don't see the problem.

From what Dave said it seems like the strategy is that, as most people try before they buy anyway, they are letting them 'try' officially in the hopes that they will then buy, almost out of good will. It does seem like an admission of defeat at the hands of the internet, but it would be interesting to know if it has shown signs of working - e.g. for Gama Bomb - or whether few people get round to paying for a solid copy.

I couldn't give a shit either way, if I like something or if there's a new album by a band I've liked beforehand, then I'll buy it. If I don't, then i wont buy it or listen to it again... which is pretty much the case here. Not a fan of this.

Never really been massive on them, but to be fair it makes sense from a publicity point of view.

The whole industry is mentalist atm, I personally feel a more in house direction is the way forward.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Does anyone know if any other similar-sized record labels have been trying this tactic recently? Basically this could be the sign of things to come, but it could just very well be the sign of things to come on Earache. Know what I mean mandems?

Indeed, I don't recall seeing any other labels doing anything of the sort.

Statistics show that Gama Bombs Tales sold a 'very similar' amount of albums when giving it away for free. The pitch is probably to get the music out there and make money via other avenues.

More downloads means more ears and more attendees to gigs with disposeable income, I was just checking my old ticket stubs, Metallica at Download in 1995 was £45 (1 day), in 2004 it was £95 (2 Days), now it's a 3-dayer in 2012 for £210.

in response to the topic, has anyone ever been to GANT?

In response to the blah blah stuff, yeah i think free downloads are of course the way of the future, gama bomb are a perfect example of how to not lose out by doing it. they sold as many (or a few more infact) albums compared to first release, but had WAY more downloads than sales thus increasing their fanbase loads. since that album they have been offered shows all over the world where they now have a (legal) following of downloaders who will happily come to the shows and go mental. People who care will always want to buy and own recorded music, people who care less will want to go to shows and get the experience if they dig something. the music industry is dead, long live the music industry.

It's essentially 'try before you buy' ain't it. As Dreamo said, Gama Bomb didn't lose out when they did TftGiS (though they were on earache, so it makes no difference either way) so it can't be all that bad.

Metal fans are Brazil are mental, too - they absolutely love their black, thrash and death metal there apparently. Such a wasted opportunity.
