New Nightwish Album

Postby Darkweasel on Thu Aug 02, 2007 11:36 pm

Been listening to the new Nightwish album the last couple of days. A lot. It's an absolute belter. Much better than I thought it would be.
Sure, new bird's vocals were never going to match the uniqueness of Tarja's but she's got some nice vocal tricks up her sleeve and it's a very confident sounding debut.
Marco, the mad, hairy bass player even gets a song virtually to himself. Can't imagine many people here are too bothered but I don't care. I love it.
(It's not on torrents yet btw - Nuclear Blast are just very nice people)

I used to like Nightwish back in the days of old. I liked Once for quite a while, but I'm bored of them now. And what I've heard of the new stuff is really terrible. Especially that Amaranth song or whatever it's called. It sounds like a bloody disney disco song, and that new woman doesn't help. She can sing fine, but she sounds like a pop/dance singer and isn't suited to this band at all.

But saying all that I don't reeally care about Nightwish anymore. I'd like to have one quick listen of the new album just out of curiosity, but I'm not going to go out of my way to do it.

I've never really given Nightwish a proper chance (partly thanks to living with someone who despises them with a passion), although I have heard one or two songs by them that I like and have been tempted to buy their back catalogue before when Music Zone were selling them all for a fiver.

I heard Eva and wasn't particularly impressed. The new singer has a great voice but is too poppy for my liking. Thought they would have gone for someone a little bit closer to Tarja's style of singing.

I'm not really interested in them partially 'cause of too many pop sensibilities, but they are very good musicians, though I have to say considering I would put Bathory and The Exploited on before Nightwish anyday then good musicianship is something I don't really care about... unless a band are SERIOUSLY crap as a result! And it has to be said Quorthon was a great musician! :rockdevil:

I must admit I do listen to Nightwish (in particular their cover of Phantom of the Opera) a bit and I don't mind them that much - though their last album with Tarja (their old vocalist) wasn't up to much.

I've listened to the samples on the Nightwish website from their new album with the new vocalist is like Evanescence, but heavier. Not exactly what I want to listen to

Favourite Nightwish albums are Wishmaster and Century Child, because Tarja stopped doing the more operatic vocals on Once, which made the sound lose some of it's uniqueness. Still a half-decent band though.

Btw, it's up on torrents now - [link]

Says the person who's Oceanborn album (Nightwish album released in 1998) I still have

I don't really mind them one way or another, but having downloaded and listened to the new album, I think it's the worst thing they've done. It just sounds too mainstream, the new vocalist sounds like Amy Lee from Evanescence, plus it's been so heavily multi-tracked with vocal melodies it sounds like The Corrs at points.

And the top quote explains why you still have it!

There is a similarity for sure, but the music pisses over anything E*********e could ever hope to write. It wasn't until around the 3rd spin that it really grabbed me. A real grower IMO.

Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.
