Thrashbey: The Early Days

Postby James on Sat Nov 08, 2008 10:08 pm

I just found mp3s on my computer of one of the first metal things I composed and recorded - I did all the instruments, and Craig did the engineering - we recorded it in a couple of days with pretty terrible equipment at our old school.

I've also discovered a summary I wrote of it at the time, which tells me that it was recorded in Summer 2003. Some of the playing and sound quality is shocking, and yet there are some occasional moments of greatness! In other words, the parts where I was ripping off Maiden-style interludes. It is a curious cocktail though because for some reason I thought it was a good idea to attempt blast beats here and there.

So without further ado, I will share this gem from the mists of time with you all! I gave it a title which I now find hilarious, but at the time I thought sounded grim and morbid: "Nostalic Visions"

And the track titles:

1. Nostalgic Visions (intro) - including a CONGA DRUM!
2. Akeldama
3. Die For Your Lord
4. Pestilence (a particularly original title)
5. All That Was Green (interlude)
6. Bullet Birth
7. The Birds

I had lyrics for each one at some point, but no vocals were recorded and these ideas are lost in the mists of time. I remember roughly the topics behind the titles though:

Akeldama - about Judas's suicide
Die for your lord - religion and shit
Pestilence - the black death
bullet birth - child soldiers
the birds - a flock of evil carrion (obviously)

 Hilarious.

Yes, this scored me a countless hareem.

Haha, the guitar tone was achieved by custom-programming my own tinny distortion effect into my entry level Zoom pedal, then piping that through a Marshall combo which must have been about a decade old. And then putting a microphone in front of it. Truly one of a kind tone!

Not if it's a mini marshall combo with a zoom effects pedal.

All you have to do is type in the three letters it asks for near the top right... then click on the link... then save it.
