Too busy to watch the whole thing now, watched a couple little bits though. It's wonderful the way the parents don't blame themselves at all. If someone's going to kill themselves because they think they hear "do it" in a song, they have bigger problems. "Do it" could mean anything! You don't hear about people going out and buying an ice cream because they hear "do it" in a song. They clearly have the thought in their head already.

If anyone's interested there was a great court case like this with Dee Snider. Haven't seen or read about it in ages, but the way I seem to remember it is that they got him in as a kind of representative of metal, expecting him to come all leathered up and being a dufus. They were blatantly just trying to make a shitty example out of him. Instead he did his research very throughly, suited up and went in with a watertight intelectual argument. And won.

That was the PMRC trials. Loads of senators wives like Tipper Gore were trying to censor a lot of rock music and one of Twisted Sister's songs came under a lot of scrunity, but yeah, Dee Snider basically went in there and ripped them a new one. Frank Zappa and John Denver also argued against them.

This kid in the Priest documentary is a fucking moron. He couldn't even successfully shoot his head off with a shotgun so instead of mouthing "yehh bleh bla bluupid blidiot blaa blehh" (yeah I'm a stupid idiot), he's just there with his mong face going "oooh actually Judas Priest made me do it, it was all their fault!". Thank fuck he succeeded in killing himself 3 years later.

I find it bizarre this trial ever happened. The first question I'd want to ask is; "where the Hell did those kids get a fucking shot gun?". Did Judas Priest give it to them? No.

I reckon it'd have been like: "Johnny can you hear me? Turn that music down! You're making too much noise, I mean it do it now! All that stuff is evil, Ozzy, Judas Priest! There's backwards messages in that stuff that lead you to the beast!"

"Johnny can you hear me! Open up that door! I've been calling you for hours, I won't say it anymore! Just wait until your dad gets home, sees what you have done! Kicked out of school, you've got no job, you useless, deliquent bum!"

And then they'd be like: "Oh my god it's Johnny! Hanging by his neck! All those metal albums, have led him to death!"

What I'm trying to say is, in my own original opinion; is that now it's time for parents to open ears and listen, maybe it's too late, to see what they've been missing, music is no cause of death, it's you that suffocates, if you had opened your eyes and ears, you'd see just who's to blame.

Yeah, that's my two cents.

Probably about when they started looking for subliminal crap in Led Zepplin. I mean "yeah there's messages if you play it backwards". That's great, who listens to music backwards?!

Shit, I didn't even realise it was the PMRC. I was reading a book in an attempt to find some stuff for my project last week (didn't find whjat I wanted but it was pretty damn interesting), they had a whole section on those guys. The author was slating them because they want to censor rock music, yet as post WWII kids, they grew up on rock 'n' roll. It's the same today as it was then (in my opinion, it's actually less of an issue now), in that there was the same basic appeal in the music. Admittedly today's music is a lot heavier and sounds somewhat angrier, but I reckon I'd rather have my kids listening to loud music about dragons and Greek mythology and shit rather than anti-establishment punk. The basic appeal of it is centered somwhat around rebellion, and it has been for decades through different styles of music. Today the social situation is much different, no one writes about home politics, at least in this country, because there'#s not much to write about in terms of things that affect young people. I'm sure someone could write a song about poorly distributed budgets and shit, but I doubt it'd get anywhere. The only people that wirte about politics in America seem to be writing about 9/11 and related, and music from any other country fills a pretty small portion of the rock music market. I'm pretty sure most of the music I listen to is either fictional (Iron Maiden, later Metallica, that sort of thing), or it's general kick ass music (Pantera, Black Stone Cherry). There's also a fair bit about people that piss you off (Pantera again, Slipknot), but people are always pissed off with other people. It happens. Most people I know listen to rock music, some more than others, and not one of them has ever killed themself. I know and have known a few people who have self harmed, and I've never heard anyone blame it on music, they usually blame it on their depression. If music is depressing you, fuck, stop listening to Radiohead, pick up an Offspring album or some U2. If you're that influenced by the music you choose to listen to, that shit'll make you go have a party or... Stand in an elevator. Either way, beats cutting yourself.
