Re: Lessons or Self-Taught?
Self taught on guitar, bass and drums with a little sprinkle of keyboards. My technique is awful as a result but i think my playing is better overall than someone who's had lessons.
I want to learn banjo next.
I'm a virtuoso on the pink oboe.

Yeah I've wanted a 5 string banjo for ages and ages now.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Re: Lessons or Self-Taught?
I got lessons for about 2 years, then realised I was getting ripped off, so I left and started to work stuff out for myself. I bought this one book, which taught me most of the theory I know, and I picked stuff up from other places.

Re: Lessons or Self-Taught?
I'm a self taught guitarist and it shows, but I reckon me sucking is more down to laziness than needing a teacher. I understand a fair bit of the theory as well thanks to learning classical piano for years, but I've never really paid any attention to it. If I'd actually gone and got lessons I probably would have hated the bloody thing, so self taught all the way.

never had a lesson!
learnt what theory i know just from playing for long enough really and making sense of things!
you don't need to be taught technique, or theory, really... just gotta learn how to make sense of it all in your own head! and try doing things differently as often as possible!

Re: Lessons or Self-Taught?
Being self taught is definatley the way forward... its 100% you, its natural, with influence of those you admire, rather than it being artificial from a teacher. Thats what i found after being self-taught for 3 years, then going to a tutor for 1 year where i didnt feel comfortable with what i was learning, and left.. and have carried on teaching myself since. However, a downside to this (for me) is possibly lacking a bit in technique, but practise is practise i suppose!

Re: Lessons or Self-Taught?
the worst thing i saw was my mate (he was pretty tidy on guitar in all fairness) at college had a teacher who was awesome, he got lots better but the guy refused to teach him anymore because he was just mimicing the teachers playing exactly!
more you practice, better you'll get.. simple as... if you follow practice routines you will be good at playing certain excercises.. if you just play what you wana play when you wana play it, you learn more about everything (especially if you pay attention to the way you're playing it, and try playing things different ways, etc)
anyways, swings and roundabouts and all that

by backwards powerchord do u mean a minor 3rd diad? well i suppose that could mean having the minor 6th aswell and that minor 6th could be the root note instead and that would make it the second inversion of a major triad, isnt it crazy just by moving the fifth of a minor chord up a semi tone it becomes a major chord. aaahh the wonders of chord theory god im fucking sleepy....

I've bought a few books on theory (off the advice of YZ) and it's actually been quite helpful so far.
