I do believe in sexual equality but it has to be equal. Same as racial equality. The fact is there's very little segregation in the society in which I live, and what there is is pretty insignificant (usually). Things like that text your mate sent, that doesn't really mean anything. I assume both of you are blokes, in which case he's not planning for any girls to see it, and isn't really going to piss them off. It's not the same as punching your wife because the chicken's a bit dry. As far as I'm aware, and I may be wrong, most places in the UK, the US and europe are like that, and those that aren't will be forced into it eventually because of all the laws that protect women (and men) from things such as beatings and sexual harassment. There's other countries where the "problem", if they consider it to be one, stems from their religion and that's a different matter.

Damn, that post was way longer and way more geeky than it set out to be...

Again our society may not be segregated but it is unequal. That text is a minor point but it is an example of a wider problem. The 'glass ceiling' is not a myth. There are less women in parliament, in high-paid jobs and are, on average, paid less for the same work. There are statistics that can be found to prove these things but I can't be bothered at the mo.

Your attitude to the text also reveals your latent sexism. It's ok because we're 'both blokes' and no women are going to see it. The problem is the thought process behind the message not who sees it. It's not the same as punching a woman but just because our society has progressed to one point in terms of sexual equality doesn't mean it has to go further.

Our country is patriarchal. It is also white supremacist and homophobic. That doesn't mean that everyone in Britain is like that but the structure very much is that way.

At the end of the day, I'm an uptight cunt who moans about everything like a woman.

Fair point. I reckon the fact there is less women in higher jobs is something that is changing over time. There's less in their way these days, and I reckon most of what is still in their way is just people of an older generation following their old ways. You also have to bear in mind that more men work than women do. It's probably also because of the possibility of having children, maternity leave and all that. But to be honest that's as much a blessing as it is a curse.

This is probably one of those conversations that's better had in person...
