Guitar Strings

Postby zykloned on Thu Jan 14, 2010 6:11 pm

I'm in guitar nerd mode today.

What strings do the guitar players among you use?

I generally go for the GHS Boomers, they're nice, they had this set of 'cryogenitically frozen' strings that obviously I had to try, they had 3 black coated strings, and 3 of the frozen strings, novelty obviously, but they sounded pretty good as well.

I've recently been trying SG strings, there's a Andreas Kisser Signature Series I'd quite like to get my hands on, the tone on the 10-46's that I've been playing with make me want to hug my guitar like I would a big fluffy pillow! Pure awesome.

What do you lot use?

I like any string, im not picky. My fav ones are DR strings and Ernie ball regular slinky. It really depends what tone i want.

I prefer d'addrios .009 to 0.42. I used to play 10 or 11's when i started but i reckon it just puts extra strain on your hands,
also i don'y like the muddy bottom end. Tried some boomers this week as it was all i could get but they don't seem to belt out harmonics like the d'addrio or gibson.

Ernie Ball - Heavy Bottom Skinny Top, perfect! For guitar and bass, tried a few different strings for bass recently and settled on the Ernie Balls too, quite surprisingly!

I should change my strings far more than I do, but when I do get new ones I just go for Ernie Ball slinkies (probably because they're the easiest to find), size 10.

Elixirs are the greatest - and worth every penny. I put some on my Rhoads in Feb, recorded an album and played every practice and gig since with it, and they are still shiny and twangy!! I can't recommend them highly enough.

For guitar I'm tunned to C standard so I have to use ernie ball beefy slinky 11 to 54. There ain't much other choice for strings other than ernie ball if your down tunning. Most strings only cater for Drop D tunnings.
For my 7 string i use ernie ball 10s with an extra 58 on the bottom.
If I'm ever using standard tunning I prefer 10's cos cos you get the fatter sound with the leads and riffs.
For bass the best ones I ever had were DR strings byt they're really expensive. I've been using 45 to 105 rotosound or ernie ball in Eb. I'm experementing now with some 50 to 110 rotosound cos we're trying a D standard tunning so I haven't settled on anything yet

Yea i used to all the time when i was a teenager, I reckon it gave me good vibrato and bending control, just 25 years playing and a few bouts of tendonitis later now I want to play well but with minimal effort . Also I only detune tune one tone.
