FFVIII is fucking boss, but it's just so easily exploitable if you know how.

Re: Console Gaming
I've finally got to the 'OMG! We all know each other!' 'twist' in FFVIII, I forgot how hilarious this storyline is. It's still a bit tedious, but it's getting better. I really did forget how tedious this game is though. And I also don't like how the characters you don't use don't automatically level up as you do, like they do in FFVII. It's really annoying when the storyline forces you to use characters who are 10 levels below your main party, making you die everywhere. Bloody hell. Why do Square have to make life so difficult for us sometimes? Fisherman's Horizon has lovely music though.

Uematsu is amazing. But agreed, VIII had a bit of a daft story - though the ending was such a monstrous clusterfuck that I never bothered paying attention.
Props to Laguna's scenarios though, nice to have a likeable character in constrast to that pussy Squall. His attitude really gets on my tits after awhile.

Re: Console Gaming
Yeah, Squall's a right wanker. Just basically a grumpy teenager complaining about everything. Laguna is a hilarious lovely man, it would've been much more fun if he was the main character!
I forgot the one other thing I really hate about FFVIII - the weapon system. I think I'm now near the end of disc 2 possibly, and I still haven't changed Squall's weapon at all, because I can't find the right bloody items. The fact that you have to find a magazine, have the right items and have money on top of that is ridiculously over the top! What was wrong with just being able to buy weapons in the joyous way FFVII let you do everything? That's the problem I find with VIII, it's far too tedious and over-complicated to do anything really. But for some reason I feel compelled to carry on playing.

Re: Console Gaming
OK! If you use emulators, I highly recommend getting Majuu Ou (translated to King of Demons) It was never released outside of Japan but is well worth looking at.
Its a cross between Megaman and Castlevania and can be fucking tricky! There are two different endings and getting the good one is really, really hard! Anyway, check it out:

Actually Jon, you don't need the magazines to change weapons - just the items. Common misconception!
Looks bloody brilliant Tom!

Re: Console Gaming
Ah really, I didn't know that! Well it's still rubbish because I can't find the items... Nevermind, I think the game is finally about to good for me soon! The horror of being forced to switch parties and used the characters you haven't built up is a horrible element of any of the FF games I've played I suppose (though it's not too bad in VII as the characters slowly level up throughout, which is lovely, just like everything else in VII). Anyway I'm looking forward to finishing this and moving on to IX, so we can have more lovely conversations about the joy of good FF games.
Have you played/seen any of XIII-2 yet? Can't remember if I asked you earlier on in the thread, but anyway, it's a bit shit. They stuck open towns and a time-travel plot device that supposedly makes the game not so linear, but they still forgot to create good characters and a good storyline. You only play as two characters in the whole game, apparently. How rubbish is that! Square have gone well bloody bollocks. I have no hope for number XV.
That does look bloody brilliant Tom, I might bloody well have to get that one! Is it incredibly hard though? I don't know if I can handle many more rage and tear inducing games. For some reason I decided to torture myself by downloading Sonic 4 on my phone (the excitement of it finally being on Android completely made me forget about how horribly sickening the game is, yet I find myself playing it rather a lot for some reason). The boss of the Lost Labyrinth zone is horrifying on a mobile phone. I can't do it. So many times I've been compelled to let out a mighty roar and throw my phone with a powerful force, but then I have to remember I'm the tube and need to control myself. Good grief. Episode 2 better be better, or I'll definitely be sick.

Here is a lovely musical joy from FFVIII that I remember being amazing. If it wasn't for the glory of old Nobuo Uematsu, the game really would be rubbish. Luckily he made it amazing in many places with his glorious joy!

Re: Console Gaming
Such tracks piss me off simply for the reason that they're used on one singular part of the game that disappears once you've finished it. Goddamn shame

It is pretty hard in places but still great fun and very rewarding when you beat a stage.

This is true, although on the other hand it does make that bit of the game extra memorable, which is quite nice.
I've finally reached the lovely futuristic joy of Esthar, so the game is finally becoming good now. Wonderful.
This another one of me fave tracks from FFVIII, and one of my favourite boss battle tracks in any game for that matter. I have to say, for all its faults, this game really does have a lot of amazing music indeed. I also remember the second two battles of the final boss haviing amazing music as well (and Ultemcia's Castle music was ridiculously amazing), but I haven't revisited those bits yet!

Re: Console Gaming
Aye I'll grant you that - Ultimecia's Castle is probably one of the best final dungeons ever. The unexpected kick to the tits when the game says "Fuck you, you have to fight bosses if you want to actually use your abilities" was brilliant, it forced you to use a more strategic approach instead of 'spam Lionheart'

Re: Console Gaming
So, that's FFVIII done! Manages to get all the GFs apart from Tonberry (couldn't be bothered with that, though I might try it at some point soon), and all the lovely weapons for Squall, Rinoa and Zell. The castle was amazing, I forgot how good it was, and the last bosses (all bloody 4 of them) were lovely as well, with all the amazing music everywhere. I'm glad I played this game again, even though the first half of it's really boring and tedious, the second half is great, especially when you get to Esthar, and as soon as you get the Lionheart and the no encouters ability it becomes very lovely indeed. The ending was nice as well, I forgot how much I used to enjoy that, even if it is a bit bonkers.
So on to FFIX I suppose, with a bit of Broken Sword in between!
Oh Dave, I don't suppose you know where I can secretly download a secret copy of the FFVIII soundtrack do you? I'm finding it hard to locate, what with the FBI trying to destroy the internet, and I don't really fancy buying it off Amazon for 50 odd quid!
