I have booked a hair cut for Friday morning! It took me ages to actually go in that place, especially as it is a bit fancy ( http://www.escapehairsanctuary.co.uk/ ).
I was just weighing up factors:
Cut:
- much less hassle to wash and brush
- much more neutral appearance, making me less self-conscious when meeting new people, going for interviews, etc.
- ideal for activities such as football, martial arts, and swimming (which I never do because of long hair)
- generally more appealing to family, especially now I'm back home (not that they are against long hair, but you know)
- end of uni seems as good a milestone as any, what with job hunting and all
- and finally, the controversial point: there are often times when I don't particularly want to be pigeonholed into the same category as the bonehead METUL fans who just act like "alternative" tits for the hell of it. I will still love heavy metal regardless of hair length!
Don't Cut:
- Despite the last point above, one obvious reason for having long hair is to let loose a bit when attending or playing gigs (even though for the bulk of my time it remains tied up 24/7)
- In some ways I quite like having a hairstyle which isn't a bog standard fashion look - although this tends to be outweighed by the preference for making a neutral impression these days.
- I know it's only hair, but I have grown it for about 5 years and to get rid of it is quite irreversible in the short-term.
- and the main thing which caused most delays: I am terrified of such dramatic change, and have a gnawing feeling that I'm just being a bit of a sell-out and will regret it.
I suppose the answer is that it IS only hair, and if people have a problem with it one way or the other then they're the posers.
~ ~ ~
So yes, overall I think it's time for a change - the main question is what to have instead. I don't want it shaved off, but I don't want it really below the ears much. I'm sure they would have some ideas if I just said "short but still some body to it".
This is so scary.

Re: AAAAAH!
go for either a john connor or rick astley style haircut.not much point otherwise
i had a tidy up haircut at the back of the lower neck the other week.i hadnt had it cut since last august.almost 1 year.i have had the sides shaved short every month since last august though.
the original/oldest hair round my lower neck was just so shabby and curling up that it was a real irritation and pretty scruffy.
i am still going to grow it though, the top looks cool and ill continue to let it lengthen/slick it back.the newer hair is near the root so it will eventually become straighter and easier to tie up when it gets longer again.
the back will even out now its all the same length.but yeah it feels kinda weird having it cut after a long amount of time leaving it.for the first fortnight or so i was probably more conscious about it after it was cut than when i had it messy.but yeah, its only hair,it will grow back in time if you do cut it short then have any regrets/second thoughts.why not keep your ponytail handy and glue it back on accordingly
gig wise long hair looks cooler.if your gonna have it cut,at least keep enough length for it to swish about when headbanging.id feel naked if i was to ever have a short back and sides and thin on the top again.

Well done.
If I lived in London, I'd suggest I buy you a Blue WKD and encourage you to pull a 17 year-old but I'm sure that'll just come naturally with having sex-fiend hair.

Re: AAAAAH!
p.s.although we all say its only hair please i urge you not to do or have any of the following:perms/highlights/tints/purchase any straighteners/spend longer than 5mins styling it.
these are things that only girls should be doing.any male doing any of the above is a tart or a ponce.
a bit of gel is fine by the way.
i disagree when people say to males that long hair is only for females, because in reality its usually said by trend followers, chavs or football geezers who dont have the bottle to grow their own hair themselves and/or are just jealous.

Re: AAAAAH!
My brother has some hair straighteners, to go for that straw-like spikey look. I mock him about them to get revenge for his mockeries of my hair.

Re: AAAAAH!
Not that mine is particularly long anyway, but I had it cut really short last summer - and hated it. It just felt really weird having short hair. For reference, this is what James looked like last time he had short hair (that said, he is about 14 or 15 here):

Re: AAAAAH!
Thanks for that. I'm not having it that short though, certainly.
