My point was more the presence of a rock musician, not his playing...

Re: Michael Jackson is Dead
I've just heard McDonalds have brought out a commemorative MJ burger. It's a small 50 year old piece of meat sandwiched between two ten year old buns.
What's the difference between Alex Ferguson and Michel Jackson? Ferguson will be playing Giggs in August!
Doctors are trying to determine the probable cause of death; so far they have ruled out the sunshine, the moonlight and the good times.
(these horrible gags were all poached off Facebook)

Jon has pretty summed it up perfectly for me, was a massive musical influence on me as a kid and beyond. Basically wrote the best pop songs in existence and although he was one messed up cat.
They are/were both nonces, and the fact that he was messed up does not excuse his actions.

the fact he paid off the first child with an extreme amount of money is unfortunately a sure sign of guilt. The second fella was obviously a leech but the damage was already done!
I dont suppose you can argue with his musical ability, but to see him worshipped over the past couple of days in the papers and on the box is a disgrace. Using the terms idol or hero is wrong especially with the sacrifices people in the armed forces make everyday. I wont argue he was a major influence on alot of people for the music he has produced but surely his behaviour over the years should be taken into consideration when it comes to hero worship!

Re: Michael Jackson is Dead
It is no surprise though, there is constant veneration for those involved in the performing arts (film, music, sport) compared to other equally talented/worthy professions, and their absurd income reflects it too. I don't know whether it's what the public actually want or whether it's the media stirring it up to fever pitch, but either way I find it quite depressing in general.
On musical grounds though let's remember MJ was at one point an amazing singer and general performer, especially at such a young age. He peaked a good 20-25 years ago though, and it's pretty clear that he became a victim of the insane celeb-culture described above (and not the first).

Re: Michael Jackson is Dead
I agree with what james said, i thought the news was supposed to give an impartial view of all the topics it presents. They are all pushing the Hero worship too hard in my eyes, and leaving out as many of the negative facts about his life as possible. Im not saying i think they should go on about some of his actions i just think there are more important things going on in the world than the rather unfortunate death of this guy, who in my eyes was a Over the hill pop artist, in desperate need for cash, a man who seemed ashamed of his general appearance,so much so he paid to reconstruct his face and possibly skin, once paid off a child during a molestation case to prevent a judgement being reached. Surely you wouldn't want children to idolise someone like this??
How long till the conspiracy theories come out over him being skint and the insurance money.......

I don't think the news has been impartial for a very very long time, but that is a very fair point.
I think this basically boils down to how important he was as an artists for yourself, but i do find it hard to believe that anyone could not have a soft spot for at least a few of his tracks.

Re: Michael Jackson is Dead
Well it's always funny when the media get involved.
5 years ago he was a perverted child abusing sex pest, etc.
Now the guilt kicks in and they feel bad about what they printed it's like they have to show this massive show of support.
Personal standpoint, great musically, on a personal issue, I'm not too fussed about his passing, I didn't know him.
Ultimately, if he was the child abusing man that he was accused of being (aforementioned lawsuit pay-offs pointing in that direction) then it doesn't matter about his mental state, it was either jail or death.

Re: Michael Jackson is Dead
Paying off the kid doesn't at all mean he was guilty. If someone was claiming child abuse madness against him, it could easily be a lie created just so the family could get some money, and perhaps he paid them off to get them to shut up and not damage his reputation as he had enough money to do so, so the plan worked.
Obviously that might not be the case, but people are so quick to take pleasure in the falling of someone famous who is seen as a hero to many. It's like the Green Goblin says in Spider-Man, the one thing the public loves more than a hero, is to see a hero fail.
I don't know what is true and what isn't, but I choose to believe that Jacko wasn't guilty of the things he was accused of. He was never proven guilty, and he was obviously messed up and still very much a child inside, but I don't think that means he's a paedo. People are just so quick to point the finger sometimes. Unlike Jade Goody, I think MJ does actually deserve the attention and praise he's getting, and will be getting, in the media at the moment. He should be remembered for the amazing things he achieved, not for the vicious rumours spread by the tabloids.
Incidentally, Give In To Me (the one with Slash) is an absolutely amazing song!

Its probably a good thing these shows didn't go ahead anyway. With a face like MJ's itwould've been like He-man: The Musical, with Skeletor moonwalking.

i agree with Jon
The US legal system is very different to ours. It allows them to come to some kind of settlement, with no blame apportioned.
If any child of mine was ever abused in any way, no amount of money in the world would stop me draggng their ass through every court in the land to get justice.
the fact that they accepted a financial settlement of 20 milllion, suggests to me that they actually only wanted money, not retribution.
