Allow me to introduce to you all the sorry fate that awaits those that shun so called casual gaming. It's a slow and depressing spiral, where fun becomes something you have to literally beat out of a game after nothing but an unending series of crushing and total defeats. You begin losing your objectivity and can no long enjoy the simple things in life ("Bah Mario & The Six Golden Coins? What lame ass pure gay shit, try playing Super Contra with nothing but a guitar hero controller!"), soon enough you come to the realisation that all console gaming is nothing but a form of mass market brainwashing, designed to keep the plebs hooked up to their electronic teet whilst it destroys their in built reward system with little achievements and arbitrary points.

All the while you're finding more and more arduous games to play, it'll start with sim-lite titles like Arma2 or a casual flight sim. Eventually you'll bleed into 4X games & obnoxiously detailed turn based strategies like Hearts of Iron 3 or Crusader Kings 2. Maybe you'll find your fix for a while with a title like X-3, but none of it matters. All the spark in your life is being fed into the endless cycle of grind=reward. Till one point the tipping point comes and you start looking up videos of ultra realistic sims and they're all very impressive.

Stuff like this:

You watch it and think to yourself "God damn that is giving me a monster hard on, but it's £45 quid, I can't justify that kind of spending!" But obviously you relent in the end. Then you are faced with what is essentially the next cheapest thing to actually owning a Russian attack helicopter, you sit in your cockpit gazing glass eyed at the seemingly endless array of buttons trying in vain to turn on the primary and secondary batteries. So your dreams shattered you slug on and the impressive visages of combat you watched in glorious HD slowly give way to the realisation that this will be more akin to your gaming experience.

Don't follow me down this dark path friends, it's cold and unforgiving, it'll leave you naked, jaded and alone.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

That was beautiful.

What about bullet hell games? Do they not provide the thrill and challenge you seek?

Unfortunately not Tom, there's not enough depth to them. Though they are impressive in their own right, but they become almost mechanical reflex games.

Reminds me of owning House of the Dead 2 on the PC. After a while you could just wander into an arcade and complete the whole game on a single credit, the little audience of 8-10 year olds staring in gob smacked amazement was quite nice.

I need that razor's edge combination of immersion, difficulty and polish to really get me going.

I know Billy, how about speed running games? Going for world records. It requires fast thinking, a great degree of skill and that all-important immersion you seek. Seriously, you should give it a try.

Check out this website:

http://speeddemosarchive.com/

It is the premier site for speed running and contains vast archives of all the world records. Find a game you love and see how fast you can complete it. I have been running Symphony of the Night for a while now and have got my time to around 45 minutes. Way off the 29:00 WR, but it's pretty fun!

Or...

Come to London and have loads of funs with your UK Thrash bois! Me and others will be coming to Essex for a visit soon also, be there!

Oh I'll be at the feastings, I'm making pulled pork.

I did try speed runs, they were not for me (I lack the competitive drive I think, cheers for the suggestion though dude) the problem is most likely a lot deeper than I'm giving credit, but without derailing the entire thread into my personal foybals I'll link to something that I am looking forward to (and have played somewhat in beta).

They're all players btw, which is nice. It's the sequel to a game I very much enjoyed back in the day. It's also going to be free to play, so keep your eyes peeled maybe?

What about the Metal Gear solid series? I can't vouch for Snake Eater onwards (I've got Snake Eater in the 360 HD remake but I'm still to play it) but MG:S and MGS2 have all the makings of what I consider a perfect game.

Even if the controls are slightly dodgy.

What about them?

I already played through them back in the day.

Always worth a re-visit for the nostalgia squeals, the HD package gives it an excuse, probably the most engaging gaming sessions since the golden days of MW2 and GH.

I prefer to go full nerd for my gaming kicks these days, it tends to be PC strategy games or nothing

How does Planetside work out to be free to play? I miss shooters.

I got my PS1 set up on a tiny TV in my bedroom... so far, I've been tooting on Crash Bandicoot (still wanna get 2,3 and CTR), Abe's Exoddus, Tony Hawk's 1 & 2

picked up Tomb Raider in a charity shop the other day, that's some fun right there!!

{boring nerdy bit}
had to fix my playstation this week because it wasn't reading discs consistently. So I took it apart SEVERAL times, put it back together.. it worked sometimes until it was completely failing the other day (and wouldn't even get to the tinkly PS screen). Totally didnt notice the power adjuster for the laser on the ribbon cable, upped the power and it works absolutely fine with every game!

Anyone here play shmups? I've put a lot of time into Mushihimesama Futari, Ketsui, DoDonPachi and others and I really love the genre, the new DoDonPachi is coming out for 360 next year, should be good.
