emulation old school heaven

Postby radioactive rik on Fri Jan 21, 2011 4:14 pm

ok,so a few months ago(before i no longer had internet at the flat) i looked into emulation a little bit deeper than when i first heard about it a couple of years ago.
originally emulation in early 2000 still had its problems ie: glitches, freezing etc etc.

years ago i was tempted by emulation but never really technical enough to test it all out.also didnt have a household laptop until a few years back so,with my family not being pc owners until i got the laptop,i was always a console nut.
i would collect retro stuff from ebay and retrogame shops.

emulation has come a long way over the last decade and there are some great sites and they have literally the a-z of games across many 8-16bit systems.

of course theres no better sense of pride than owning the genuine games with the box, manual, posters, maps etc but when i moved out last year i realised just how much stuff i had accumulated.

last summer i bought a little 2nd hand netbook from a colleague for web browsing in the flat as i had left my original laptop at my parents(due to the internet subscription they were still contracted to)

after discovering just how piss easy(once you know how) it is to own every game(prior to ps1,n64) that i could ever dream of,i started to download a vast library of games for:snes, neogeo, mame and capcoms cps1+2 arcade games.

after a few hours of figuring it all out and downloading the emulator programs to run the game files,i was like a kid in a sweetshop.it was a dream come true.
i bought a 4gb usb stick to back up everything, just so i have a hard copy if the netbook ever needed restoring/resetting etc.

i then proceeded to test a few of the emulated snes rpg's(which i already own on cart) and they run like clockwork. this meant that i could then have the courage to part with my beloved snes collection and so i slowly started ebaying the games which fetched crazy prices on some occasions and i made myself over £1000+ and counting.also selling off some of my ps2 compilations and a few ps1 titles.

it was a win win situation beacause i saved space, made a fortune(for example Terranigma got me £130!!) and also i still technically own the games and can play them whenever i like. another great thing is that they are all in one place and you can switch between games.

i bought a snes usb gamepad for £10 off amazon for the ultimate feel.

and it works perfectly.

if anyone wants info on how to go about doing this, then PM me.

coolroms and romnation are the 2 sites i used to obtain everything.

i got so many shoot em ups and beat em ups its amazing.as well as all the rare jap rpg's which were never released in europe/states. they have been hacked/decoded/translated from jap to english by uber geeks for the rest of the not so technical geeks like me to enjoy.

when i move back to my parents with my gf in april i will use the netbook as my retrogaming console and will eventually get a 20 inch monitor to link it to so i can play the games at a table/desk

also i will get some snes controller to usb adaptors so i can use genuine snes controllers on it(as the wannabe one above feels a little bit cheapy and light)

this means we could do another bonestorm competition anytime anyplace. all we need is my netbook and if the battery runs out, then if someone had a 2nd laptop/netbook on windows and i can use the 4gb stick to upload sf2 on their one and we can carry on.

it is definitely a lot easier than before.

heres some of my faves on capcoms cps 1+2

i have 80 snes games,all the capcom cps 1+2 arcade games.200+ MAME/arcade games,and around 90 of the 151available neo geo/snk games.

thatl keep me busy for ages and i can always add.

Fuck yes! I have been playing around with emulators for a while. Since I have a Wii, I've been downloading games on that but unfortunately, it doesn't have all the games I want so emulation seems to be the way!

I am STILL trying to find a way to play SYMPHONY OF THE NIGHT on my Mac, can anyone confirm that this is at all possible? I downloaded a PS1 emulator but I cannot find a working ROM, please help if you can!

Also, bring on BONESTORM II, those who wish to challenge me for my title, bring it on... Ahhahahahaha!

I'll give it a go, also i though emulation was a natural state of play.

C&D and AVP are insanely pro.

I wonder if it's possible to play these games multiplayer via the internets.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

The PS1 emulator I got was PCSX, I don't know if it just plays PS1 games from the actual discs or if it can play ROMS...?!?!

I struggled on ps1/n64,saturn emulators in general. i think the 3d era games will be that bit trickier to run.
im on windows so not sure how it all converts to a mac.

perhaps try to get a ds emulator and try and get the 3 most recent castlevania games on them.they are all class.and a great alternative to not being able to play symphony or the night.ve.

Portrait of ruin is my fave on there and also dawn of sorrow is cool. order of ecclesia was a little too frustrating and the glyph weapon system may not be to everyones taste.it wasnt to mine and it didnt feel as classic.
but you may like them all.

i think, give it another 5-10 yers and all ps2,ps1,saturn,xbox etc will be available and easy to emulate.

Both PS1 and N64 are more than possible.

Hmm, well Macs are good at giving me the fear.

Perhaps the elder god Craig could be summoned to the altar of 64 bit spells to explain.

Rik, if you ever find a rom for Capcom's Red Earth (or Warzard, as the JP title was) then let me know how it works and if it's any good. That's probably one of the only Capcom games I've never played.

I am pretty boss with emulators so if any of you need any help holla nigga.

Basically the reason your more modern emulators (ps2 etc) are not working is because they need the BIOS for them them to work.

Unlike the the old rooms (Snes/MD etc) the software was built around the rom, un the case of the PS2 its needs the BIOS to work. While there are emulators out there that perfectly work, they do not include the BIOS file revision for "legal" reasons and the only way to get one is via the console itself with super duper techincal know how involving soldering and other stuff.

That said I do have a ps2 emulator and it fucking rules, I get to play my favourite wrestling game ever (Fire Pro Wrestling Returns).

MAME emulators are pretty cool if you prefer "pure arcade games" nothing beats playing and completing all of the Golden Axe's one after each other.

Cant you just use windows within a mac and use PCSX ? via virtualbox

I would assume that PCSX would work with PS1 games as well?

JFYI PCSX plays games via the cd or iso from the hard drive.
