I suppose this is kind of thrash. But anyway. Bloody hell, I just bought Slaughter of the Soul and it's fucking amazing.

Fuck.

I've never heard them, but I've heard they were originally death metal but then changed and invented metalcore.

Wash your mouth out!!!!!! Metalcore indeed!!!!
At the gates played very technical and brutal swedish death metal, but what set them apart was the vocal style of Thomas Lindberg (ex-grotesque, also in lock-up), which was pretty unique for death metal sounding more black metal in style, in fact, i interviewed him for our zine in 1995 and he said this about his vocal style "i'd say it was our own style of death metal, and the new wave of black metal came after The Red In The Sky Is Ours LP(debut full length), so i think it was the other way round really. I mean there were no black metal bands around when we did it".

They actually were far more of an influencial band to the swedish sound (in flames, arch enemy, sacrilege, etc) than any "metalcore" bands, and obviously they had a big bearing on the sound of "The Haunted" as 3 ex- at the gates members formed that band!!.

Anyway, besides all that, they were a brilliant band, both on disc and live, and all 5 of their albums MUST be heard!!!

There's an unseen fortune under their belts
Are golden temples a symbol of God's way
This horde of wealth is a sickening display"

Partly, but not solely. More to do with the fact that Faraz put At The Gates as number one (with an added 'immensely so' bonus comment) at the top of his list when I asked him what his influences are and what sort of stuff he'd suggest I listen to so that I'm fully thrashed/deathed up and ready for Damnas. Then Jamie suggested (or, rather, TOLD me) that because I'm now in a thrash/death-sort-of-thing band, I should (or rather, that I NEEDED TO OR ELSE  ) listen to everything by At The Gates, and he said Slaughter of the Soul was one of their best ones. And I did read your Brew View review again anyway, and it was so positive about it, I had to get it.

I have to say though, it was a tough choice between that and The Black Flame by Wolf. But in the end ATG won out due to the fact that I needed to listen to more music like that due to future Damnas fun.
