Chinese Gibsons

Postby Metal Iain on Mon Jul 21, 2008 1:12 pm

Alright!

Recent, boredom-induced YouTube activity has brought to my attention the seemingly booming trade in knock-off Gibsons. Whilst I had been aware of knock-off Ibanez Jems on eBay, I dismissed them as complete shite because they looked nowhere near close to an actual Jem. However, the same Chinese, web-based companies - e.g. http://www.paylessguitar.cn and http://www.samin.cn - make 'Gibsons' to what appear to be much higher standards and for very little in terms of money.

That Les Paul, for example goes for US$240. They do add an extra US$110 as a flat rate to ship the guitar but that still leaves you with a fairly convincing looking knock-off for circa £175. Whilst opinions on the quality of the guitars seem to be mixed, with Gibson devotees crying about their illegality and opportunists snapping them up before the operation is shut down, the word is that they are actually made semi-clandestinely in the Epiphone factory in China. Indeed, some of the guys who have them have even noticed that the pick ups have the Epiphone stamp on them. Whilst you might ask, 'Why would I want an Epiphone Les Paul, even if it is going for less than £200', I reckon the sheer novelty value of the guitars could be worth it.

There are still relatively few videos on YouTube about the knock-off Gibsons but the few that are up seem to suggest they're not that bad. The one thing they seem incapable of pulling off is having ebony fretboards on the Les Paul Customs but, at that price, it's hardly surprising. Whilst I'm not exactly scrambling for my wallet, I reckon £170 for this isn't too shoddy.

My dad went to factory where there made in Bejing or something and the guy sent me a tonne of other guitars they do. I'll see if I can find them because I've never seen these ones of ebay etc...

I quite like the look of the SG's they do. I've never really liked them enough to buy the full wack but at that price they are quite tempting.

Yeah. I reckon at that kind of price you're going to be hard pushed to feel like you've wasted your money. I was e-mailing a guy who bought one and was impressed enough to buy three more. Allegedly the reason it came about is because Gibson just pay some random Chinese factories to make Epiphones for them so the nice people in the factory have rewarded Gibson by making knock-off Gibsons to sell at literally one-tenth of the price of a real Gibson.

Class act.

What are the quality of the ibananananaeszzes like, i mean for the money obviously.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

I've not played one or anything but I don't think there's much chance you could pass them off as real in the way that you probably could with the Gibsons. They seem to be going for £150 shipped which is OK but with them the cheap hardware they use is arguably going to come into play more so than it would on a Gibson-style guitar. There'll probably be something about them on an Ibanez forum seeing as I remember them being the knock-offs that eBay cracked down on - they could probably get sued for allowing them or something.

If they did a knock off Death Angel Jackson I would be all over that like a rash. But they don't.

I wouldn't pay £10 for a Les Paul/SG.

So...

But you have a needlessly big collection of guitars already. Why not add to it?

I'll take a photo of them all one day. And you can gorp at them.
