How should a thrash band look???

Postby Immortalicide on Tue Dec 18, 2007 10:07 pm

One of the focal points of Metallica when they started was that they had "no image", they just played dressed the way they always looked. Is it okay for thrash bands to adopt an image and dress up or is it part of the thrash psyche to dress "normal"??

Everyone should look like Cliff Burton.

I personally think there shouldn't be a dress code. The thrash look is cool, sure, but if you look at a band that doesn't have the visual staples of the genre and you call them posers, you need to reconsider calling yourself a thrash fan.

Yes, they look normal and they have "no image" and that is what I like about thrash bands. These guys look like men from your neighbourhood not like bunch of monsters from horror film. Personally I really don't like these strange looking panda make up on men faces. It looks unmanly and terrible to me. Of course, if bands dressed like that can play good music which can attract my attention, their image is not the reason to stop to listen to their stuff, but I prefer normal image and I think propagation of this "normal image" was one of the best things Metallica ever did.

there shouldn't be a dress code. Thrash is a form of music not a fashion show.

No image as long as they play well live and the crowd has fun. It should'nt matter.

Yeh who gives a shit. Gimmicks are good for a while but usually wear off. The music should do the talking.

I think it's different today though, the whole 80's look qouldn't exactly be considered as "normal" clothing in today's society. I still think it looks the part, but I really don't care.

no a thrash band shouldn't require a certain look, as long as the music is decent then it doesn't matter what they wear or whether they have the typical "thrash gear" on. a good example of this that comes to mind is sss, who on appearance don't look like your standard thrash band and i recall some people on here making comments about that a while back but at the end of the day their music has done the talking and they are rightfully quite popular/respected regardless of their dress sense.

When I play a gig, I don't usually think about what I'm wearing. Just put a pair of jeans on and a shirt.
Sometimes I put a death metal shirt on that I know nobody in the crowd will have heared, like Deeds of Flesh or something.

Heretic only wears top clobber, mate.

Actually our cunt drummer always dresses like a dick. For about a month he was wearing a t-shirt by this shite band called 'Divine Heresy'. I was so close to firing him but Lyall wanted to "record the EP". Pathetic.

Image serves as a first impression.

The music serves as the lasting impression.

Latter being the most important.

Every now and again, I used to go on stage in a Liverpool football top. Usually after we'd beaten Man Utd, Spurs or Leeds just to wind up the other members.

I can't see how anyone has time to dress like a thrash geek when they're in a band, there's too much other shit to be getting on with, like writing half decent songs.

Saying Metallica had "no image" is not particularly accurate, as their every-day attire clearly defined them as early 80s metal fanatics; it's hardly like they just got on stage and were not recognizable as adherents to the metal fashions of the time.
