To be honest I don't really care if you people agree with me or not. It's not like if I explain myself (which Boovidge has done perfectly well already) your opinion will change or anything in the country will change.

As for the NHS? The organisation that had hundreds of billions pumped into it to make it more efficient (with efficiency declining by 2/3rds as a result), with no future and a whole myriad of deep, serious problems? I mock anybody who cites it as an example of why this country is good.

The UK is in the top 8 richest countries in the world, yet our standard of living is among the worst in the West. Explain to me what makes this country a better place to live in than France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Austria or Denmark?

Also he NHS might well be a failing gibbering mess, but it is better than the fend for yourself or get fucked system they seem to have in America.

This isn't like a regular forum in many respects as there is a fair amount of in real life social interaction right? And as someone on here in trying to promote your band on occasion, it isn't going to do you any favours if you go about insulting people and acting like a ballbag.. well that work for Martin so maybe that is a bad example, i guess you came off as overly hostile is what i am saying.

This place should have a bit of comradery imo, not all and all dick sucking mind you but enough to help thy fellow thrasher.

Now i wasn't asking for you to agree with me in any sense was i, just to act with a little bit of common decency....makes having a discussion so much easier. Plus it's hardly the earth now is it?

I haven't got a great deal more to add really - I haven't heard anything particularly convincing against the monarchy so far. I don't view their ceremonial presence as the scar on democracy that some of you seem to. In fact, I'd say the Queen for example is a much more resolute and popular public figure in the eyes of the population than some a lot of the 'here today; gone tomorrow' political slimeballs. I can't imagine Tony Blair or indeed Gordon Brown being greeted by genuinely happy locals wherever they go. Yes, of course a lot of the tacky royal-euphoria of the great unwashed masses is pretty stomach-churning, but that doesn't have a bearing on the issue itself.

I would rather have a crowned and permanent head of state greeting foreign dignitaries with a facade of what British culture and tradition has to offer, and let politicians get on with the things that really matter to people's lives.

Royalty is such an easy target in some ways, and yet the piffling points about the concept (in it's present day constitutional sense) being some woeful bar to democracy, or the fact that bureaucratic affairs can be dredged for examples of favourable treatment, don't seem to warrant severing all links with one of the final great constants in British/English national identity.

Also, as much as I have much less rosey opinions on religion, I don't even mind the Queen's role as Defender of the Faith. The Anglican church is broadly speaking as impotent and ceremonial as the Crown, and tends to be quickly talked down when some of its more crack-pot figures make unfounded religious remarks. Just like the monarchy, that is the way I like it. A rich facet of our country's cultural heritage, and one that would leave a foul-smelling void of happy-clappy secularism if it were shut down.

Just like the fact that we still have an Anglican church, and the great cathedrals and music associated with it, we still have a British Crown which I view as far preferable to the void of fair-weather political humdrums that would remain without it.

The point of my post in saying I don't give a crap about your political views is that we're here because of our musical tastes and that is what brings us together, not whether or not we like having a Queen.

I don't have anything against anyone here and I think most of us get on fine. You're a cool guy and just because I disagree with you doesn't mean my opinion of you is going to change drastically.
