"crossover Thrash" what is it exactly?

Postby origamikid on Wed Sep 03, 2008 10:12 pm

Hey,

Ive been recently been looking at the music i listen to a bit closer and have seen alot of it comes under "crossover thrash". Now i was wondering if anybody here could help me understand what exactly this takes from each of its genres.
I can see where the punk side comes into it on bands like S.O.D and waste, but what about Nuclear Assault?

Is a staple of this just speeding everything up, keeping songs short but sweet and just generally raising hell?
Cause for me punk has always been about a emphesis on energy channeled into the music and less about the riffs, but i am hearing alot of kick ass riffing in these bands.

The main thing i can see in differance is that the music in crossover appears to be less technical then general thrash (although i am dam sure that is not the case) but the solos are shorter and the lyrics seem to be sung more aggressivley...

I dunno if anyone can give me any tips into sussin this out, cause at the minute ive been playing and writing with a thrash/general metal band but i think crossover is where my heart belongs!

Thanks !

Caps, explain. I'd get it wrong.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.

Thank the Police coming straight from the underground...

Crossover is hardcore punk and thrash mixed together. Shorter, more furious songs that still maintain a heavy and metallic edge in places. Vocals are shouted and guitar solos rip furiously, energy and power are in favor of technicality and music prowess.

Thanks !
When you hear bands like Waste they still retain alot of the technical prowless that alot of thrash bands do, hence the confusion.

Who are the highlights of the movement would you say? I am trying to expand the music that i know/have!

nuclear assault aint crossover? sound like pure thrash to me? suicidal tendancies is the best example of crossover i think, but pure thrash is alot better than crossover, crossover tends to be much less technical musically than normal thrash and i am a man of technical work

Nuclear Assault have definite crossover moments, Liker loves all that shit.

Adrenicide are rather good, and they're current.

I was just going by wiki on Nuclear Assault on that one as i never thought they wer lol although they have short songs that are very aggressive with vocals that are shouted with his awesome highpitched voice!

S.O.D are awesome but i will give the other 2 a proper listen!
Thanks!

My personal fav bands is always gonna be megadeth and Testament- but the speed and ferocity of some of this music has really intrigued me...so i dunno...I am not good enuff to play strait thrash, nor am i fast enuff to play crossover so i dunno what lies in the middle, something horrible im sure....we will find out come oct im sure!

Early Corrosion Of Conformity is prime crossover apparently. Never heard anything pre Blind so can't tell you if it is good or not although most people say their early years were their best (before they discovered Trouble and changed their sound).

Now crossover is sorted, what the fuck is "speed metal"?

I'm gonna stick my neck out here and say there is no such thing.
