I agree with Jonny_boy34, I think its a good thing for a band to have something to say, so long as they do have a valid message and not just shouting "fuck bush / blair / nazis / jews / whatever". Its good to see people taking a stand on something they are passionate about when nowdays too many bands do have nothing to say.
Music is a very powerful force and I think people who think politics and music have no place alongside each other are, to be frank, idiots.

Quality political music, but not preachy at all.

The age it's acceptable to listen to angst-charged music i.e. about 20 give or take a year.

Politics is what makes major bad stuff (and good stuff... sometimes) happen, so I guess if you don't care about bad shit happening, don't care about politics?
But one day these here politics will be there and causing shit to happen that involves you, so then you might care.
That was probably the least sense I've ever made... if you get my point, well done, if not, oh well; I know what I'm trying to say

I think it's great when a band writes songs about anything worthwhile that they give a damn about - whether I agree with their views or not I can still enjoy the music...but I really hate it when they start preaching their political opinions on stage at gigs and telling their fans what their views should be. Hardly thrash, but I saw System of a down a few years back at a festival and the singer said something along the lines of "if you support the war then fuck you" - kinda put me off the band after that.

Have System of a Down done much in the way of writing about the Turkish genocide in Armenia? As Armenian emigrés that might actually be worthwhile.

CRASS are no CRASS these days. Rimbuad is a crusty loner and Steve Ignorant is on a nostalgia trip.*

Simply, it depends on the band. When I go see punk bands, I know it's preaching to the converted but I like the feeling of vindication that can be established. OK, it's kind of pointless but at the same time it can stir passion and feelings camaraderie. Often if a band is pretty political but say fuck all at a gig, I feel that their politics is superficial - as if it's part of the style and not part of the personality. At the recent STD gig, people came up to me and other members of the band and expressed approval of my political expression.
With thrash, if NA or SR want to explain the rationale behind their political tracks that is great. When I saw both bands, they didn't bother. However, they are thrash bands first. The politics is, let's be honest, secondary to the music.
Mustaine, by contrast, has rarely said anything politically bright with the exception of the chorus in Peace Sells... He has also shown himself to be a completely clueless arsehole in modern times. His tribute to 'the cause' was stupid and now he kicks off at anti-christian metal bands and at anyone who doesn't support the US establishment.
Similarly, I have never heard SOAD say anything bright live. They seem to turn their politics into cartoonism which is counter-productive. Also, apparently one of SOAD conceded to a meat-headed argument from one of the fat idiots in Biohazard.
Oh and: Iain, they have said somethings about the Armenian genocide in interviews and I think (though I'd have to check) that their is charity they work with or donate to or something. And I believe one of the songs on the first album is dedicated to those that were killed.
