The best name for a beer ever????

Postby Immortalicide on Tue Apr 21, 2009 7:09 pm

Just recently, my good lady and myself have made a point of getting away from the kids and visiting one of the numerous micro-breweries / real ale houses here in the world famous brewing town of burton upon trent. Last week i had a pint of Attila, a strong almost black ruby porter, and if the 6.2% wasnt enough, the black metal connections with its name added it some kudos.
However, i had a pint on sunday in a micro brewery in derby called the Brunswick, and their speciality porter was, again, very dark coloured and 6%. Not only was it just an amazing drink, it was called Black Sabbath!!!
WHo else has had any good real ales recently that they can recommend???

One of my favourite choices is Fuller's ESB - not particularly dark, but has an instantly recognisable fruity flavour, it's a total classic.

I haven't drunk any beer in ages really... probably because I've been living at home like a hermit for the last few months. However, there is currently an ale fest on at Wetherspoons (I think round me that means £1.60-£1.70 per pint) so I should definitely partake of that before it finishes.

Problem with ale during alefest at weatherspoons is that if its a busy weatherspoons the taps get into an even worse state then usuall. With all the new drinks they put in for the festival etc...the taps get seriously fucked up.

I had 4 pints of something (dont ask what cause i dont know anymore lol) that each tasted like viniger...and it took them 4 pints to work out that the taps/tubes must have been dirty or whatever on 2 of the taps before they just offered me something else of the same price.

Dam u cheap weatherspoons

I would like to recommend Guinness. And Carlsberg Export. Not at the same time though.

Oregon (in particular my home from home Portland in the NW of America) has a awesome micro brewey culture due to it being one of the few states that has the old timey prohibition laws at one point.

They have brewries all over the place

my fav is this place

Sleigh'R

A delicious northwest seasonal brewed with winter in mind. A dark double alt, malty, nourishing and delicious, it's sure to keep the winter at bay, and yes, Sleigh'r does rock!

7.2% alc. = winter ale

but my fav is

Tricerahops Double IPA

Hops, hops and more hops, combine with enough malt to make this a very balanced 8.8% beer. Floral and smooth, dry hopped for aroma, an outstanding Double IPA.

8.8%alc./vol. 100+ ibus. Always available in 22 oz bottles, and on draft.

You can't whack all the Belgium Trappist beers, like Westmalle, Rochefort, Chimay, Orval and, the best of the lot, Westvleteren. Westvleteren 12 (Yellow Cap) is 10.2% and is widely acclaimed to be the best brew in the world. However, it is not easily obtainable - only direct from the monastery, or via the Belgium Shop mailorder, at astonomical prices. I did manage to get a handful once - drunk a couple, and saved the rest. Killer brew. It gets better with age.

My usual beer of choices these days is Bavarian Dunkel Weiss, a great session beer.

Some good British ales? Of Course, Skullsplitter, Owld Rodger, Old Peculiar, Traquir Jacobite Ale, Hook Norton Double Stout. Anyone into Guinness should try out that, some Oyster Stout or any Russian Imperial Stout (8%+). They'll never go back to Guinness again.

There's loads of great US microbreweries these days too. Saw a good title for a brew from over there - "Dazed and Confused", which is probably what you'd feel like after necking a few.

Chimay and Duvel are amazing and you can actually get them in pubs... for stupid money, of course. I'm not really much of a beer snob any more just because most of my drinking now takes place in pubs. Guinness all the way, to be honest, although I do like ales from time to time.

When my stepsister was in great ormond street childrens hospital when she was 12, they gave her a small can of guiness everyday as it was so full of iron and other vitamins n good stuff, and thats a treu story!! Name, I don't know. I quite like Arrogant Bastard.

My favourite beers:

Founder's Kentucky Breakfast Stout
Surly Furious
Rogue Imperial Stout
JW Lee's Harvest Ale
Rochefort 10
Aventinus
Stone Ruination IPA
Bell's Two Hearted
Bell's Expedition
Cantillon Kriek

etc, etc.

American Beer = Belgian Beer > English=German > Czech > it doesn't really matter.

How's the American beer going over there? You guys had Sierra Nevada, Anchor, Flying Dog, and Great Divide when I was there. I heard you have Stone now as well. Any body know?

Most ales are quite nice for me... not into the 'roasted' flavour ones... to me its a drink that tastes of burnt toast and roasted coffee- 2 of my least favourite tastes/smells!

I like the thick dark ales that taste like medicine - Adnam's Broadside comes to mind, makes my mouth go all fuzzy :P

Bath ales is a good one near me, and Glastonbury ales - Hedge Monkey is really nice

Also rather enjoy Tanglefoot (deceptively drinkable) and Waggledance (the one with honey in)... damn al this talk of ale is making me thirsty!!!

The best name i've ever heard of for a beer is - The Bearded Lady. it was a homebrew special my mate and his school chums made, they put it in bottles and had a great homemade label with a picture of their head mistress on the bottle. hilarious i think you will agree...
