I know exactly what you mean! Sometimes if you find it hard to get into a particular band, or even a particular song, seeing it live can somehow make it amazing, if it's a good band.

As far as thrash metal goes, I think it's far better live. That's what that kind of organic, stripped down metal (and any kind of rock 'n' roll that's like that too) is made for, to go bloody mental (as long as the sound's decent enough so you can hear what's going on!).

You can have a lovely time listening to a CD and listen to it many times, but when you experience it in your face, played by human beings expressing their goodness to your brain, it's the best. Imagine Judas Priest for god's sake, obviously I love listening to them, but seeing them live is on another level entirely, I never feel that kind of power and emotion when I'm just listening to a CD, you can't even compare it!

And from a performer's point of view, there is absolutely nothing better in the whole world than playing a live gig. You can exert a certain kind of energy on a studio record and that's a highly satisfying thing, but playing live music to an audience feels like the most amazing thing ever. And I think that works both ways, from both the band's and the audience's point of view.

Can I just have both? Going to gigs for me is a special event (that doesn't happen all that often) where I get to go and see something amazing, live and fucking loud!!!

On CD it's amazing and I would say overall CDs are the best way to enjoy bands (you can't see a band unless they're playing a show.. but cds are always there)... but a live gig is just something else, like a special bonus you get every once in a while

yeah it's all been said before I think... CDs are the best way to judge a band.... if they're shit live it just means they don't give a fuck about the fans enough to practice or play a good show, and then it's all about £££...

This is another point I was thinking about today - as much as I love live music, I get to spend very little of my time actually at gigs, whereas you can blast a CD at home, walking along, driving... or even in a park! So the versatility of having portable music is another plus.

I wasn't really asking which you enjoy more at the time, but rather which is the most important way in which a band has to deliver to be good. In other words, after a few pints most bands would be pretty appealling if they were playing heavy enough and had decent riffs, but if you went to listen to their demos/albums lots of them would probably be total mediocrity.

If I had to give up either going to gigs or listening to music in my own time, I'd have to say giving up gigs, because I spend a relatively tiny amount of time at them, whereas there's always music playing in some form.
