RETRO THREAD - 2006

Let's have a Sepultura thread.

I recently got Morbid Visions. Why the FUCK did I not get this sooner? WHY? By the way I don't really download music, so I mean on CD.

This is easily now my favourite Sepultura album. Easily. I've been listening to it non-stop.

I mean, Schizophrenia is great, but they seemed to settle into more of a typica (albeit great) thrash sound - on Morbid Visions, it's just like...pure HELL! I don't think they ever recaptured that evil, sick sound. For me they do it better than bands like Possessed as well, but that might just be me preferring the production.

As for Beneath the Remains - yeah yeah, always cited as a megalithic thrash album, and I'm not about to disagree, but I think both Morbid Visions and Schizophrenia are more exciting albums.

Incidentally, can anyone think of a band who have suffered more of a complete musical death than Sepultura? Not even Metallica come close.

I had a brief thing for Morbid Visions and Schizophrenia but Arise and Beneath the Remains are the only two of their albums that get any kind of play by me these days.

The band has really put out an incredible amount of shit though. I guess a few bands have put out equally, but not as numerous, shit albums e.g. Kreator, Megadeth, Mordred...

arise used to be my favourite sepultura record for a long while, beneath the remains finally overtook that and its been that way since. i do like Schizophrenia quite alot but morbid visions is too much of a mess for me, theres no doubt that theres some killer tracks(TROOOOOOOOOPPS OF DOOOOOOM) and riffs on there but in general i find it quite dificult to listen to,

One of my favourite music videos is that.
It depresses me to see it all fall apart musically after the genius that was Arise...

As for Morbid Visions I'm in the camp of its too much of a mess for me, some good stuff mixed in there but when you put it up against BTR and Arise its not even a competition...

yeah but isn't the point that it's meant to be a chaotic, diabolical sounding early death thrash album? I don't think they reached that style again, even though the following albums were pretty crushing.

I guess it depends whether you like your thrash "messy" in the first place. Of course it sounds messy, when you think it was a bunch of teenagers on a tiny budget, but that is part of the appeal - it is raw, relentless, evil thrash, and it doesn't get much better than Morbid Visions!

Nah, 'Chaos A.D.' is good. It's not Thrash, but it's good.

LIES!

Its boring monotonous twaddle, it invented nu-metal, thus is shit.

I think I hate it most because it came after the genius of the previous albums, otherwise I'd probably just dislike it...

A lot of people (myself included) listen to a lot more than just Metal and are inclined to agree with Jono. Chaos A.D. was, apart from a few tracks, wank.

No no no, by all means have a different opinion on something. There are plenty of things that you guys consider awesome that I'd pass off as wank. The thing that gets me is just the attitudes of some people. This was the statement that pissed me off...

It's such a close minded view to have - hating something just because it influenced something you don't like. If the guy had just said something along the lines of the songs aren't very good I wouldn't have said anything.
