Re: Why play metal?
My brother in law is a Jazz guitarist and he says "Jazz is the most interesting form of music with the most depth". He can basically play anything I play (on cd) to him from metal. He doesn't know why anyone would want to play metal as it's just so easy to play. I just wanted to know what you guys felt. Maybe he's being pretentious.

"Jazz is the most interesting form of music with the most depth" is pretty true really.

It goes back to my musicianship thread - heavy metal isn't about being a technical virtuoso, it's about passion, atmosphere, and good songwriting. Whilst I have nothing against jazz overall, I find a great deal of it lacks these qualities (but then so does a great deal of crap metal).

Re: Why play metal?
It was quite funny that when he played a pretty impressive jazz thing he looked excited and I was bored but when he played the intro to Holy Wars... The Punishment Due he looked bored and I looked excited.
When I told him that some of the Friedman solos on Countdown were part-transcribed from saxophone solo's his interest peaked a little but he said the whole thing lacked subtlety.
I was once told by a double bass player that I lived with briefly "...you don't like Jazz because you can't 'hear' Jazz. You can't 'hear' Jazz because you are not clever enough to 'hear' the sounds being made". He wanted to teach me to 'hear' the sounds by playing endless scratchy records of really boring inane Jazz. Needless to say it didn't work.
To this day, when talking to Jazz fans, I can't stop thinking "what a tosser".

People like that are just dicks and Friedmans solos are fucking shine.
I think it really is just personal opinion, some people like Jazz etc... some people don't. Simple. It just so happens Jazz can be a very 'complicated' form of music and in turn breeds pretentious people who think they're amazing just because they can play it/like it. That's just stupid and is no different to an elitist metalhead who fobbs off anything that isn't heavy.

Re: Why play metal?
I like some jazz, sounds cool and the music is awesome, but then some (lots that I've heard) is literally complete self indulgent wankery, worse than any 'shitty' shredding in metal... it's just obscure and ridiculous for the sake of it and people who think they're better for liking that are usually morons.
Ever heard Periphery? The vocals are terrible, but the guitarist is AMAZING, rhythms chords, structures, all amazing to listen to... but the guy could be a jazz guitarist if he wanted, I've seen him playing alan holdsworth stuff, insane...
I love most music and love to listen to new things and my ears want excite, metal is excite for me!
