Metal Iain wrote:I never had to reference songs at University. I used to go with quotes in quotation marks (WHEY!) and articles, books and publications in italics:

As John Stuart Mill stated in his seminal publication I Am A Dead Fag, 'Yes, I am a dead fag' (Mill, 1880: 200).

That basically works in a similar way to music (I did a music production course, so I referenced stuff all the time), with the title of the album being like the title of the book, and the song title being like the actual quote.

Nah, I always use inverted commas ('word') instead of quotation marks ("word"), unless there's speech involved. It does get a bit confusing but I remember being quite consistent about it when I still had to write essays, which is the main thing. Generally speaking, the person who was marking my essays was supposed to be cleverer than me so I expect them to know whether or not there should be an apostrophe there, e.g. in that example, fag shouldn't have an apostrophe at the end of it.

that is blair witch referencing, the standard is to just put the surname and year within the text in brackets

Ctrl+Alt+F = invaluable footnote shortcut! I don't put brackets into the text itself - referencing for my essays is like so:

'quoted text' 1 <-- being a small footnote number

_____________

1 J. Ashbey, How to Reference Stuff (London, 2009), p10.

Or for a journal article:

1 J. Ashbey, 'Pointless Thread Deviation', in Unique Vocalists, ed. J. Ashbey and C. Watson (Witham, 2009), p7.

Haha imagine if you had to reference everything on forums, that would probably kill the internet.

I hate footnote referencing. I tried it once and I ended up doubling the number of pages I had to use on my essay because references took up half the page. It's probably because I hated reading articles that used it as well. If you've got a bibliography at the end of the essay, what's the point in mentioning editors, publishers etc every couple of paragraphs throughout the essay? It looks naff too.

If I were marking an essay and I saw that, it's what I'd write. Doing it in red pen makes it seem worse than it is too.

I hate referencing e-journals. If I put the whole e-mail address in the marker has a total cry-wank, yet if I don't they go "WAAAA PLAGIARISM!!!!!!!!!!!"

I generally avoided on-line sources. Luckily our Uni had a stupidly good library for the stuff I was studying so I rarely had to do it. Mind you, it's a pain in the arse when you get a book out that clearly hasn't been read since 1963 - it happens a lot when you have to read up on the Estonian War of Independence - and you about choke to death on 45 years worth of dust. Worse still when you have to translate it into English so you can actually use it in your essay.

I suppose it just depends on the subject and lecturer. I stupidly did a course called Europe After the Cold War: the Politics of the European Union thinking that it'd be all about how we slapped the Commies. Unluckily the actual focus of the course was on the European Union bit so I had use th'internet to get statistics on the Common Agricultural Policy etc. Drier than a nun's cunt.

I did an essay on the European Union last week, it was indeed well dry.

The seminars on it were the worst. I think the lecturer took offence when I openly admitted that I wished I'd never taken Politics. Italian prick.

Mine was for the public administration module, of which we had no choice.. load of ruddy bollocks, journalists don't need to know how the local government works, they just look it up on wikipedia on the day and if they don't know, just put it in anyway and hope for the best...

I think it looks much more pleasing than having to skim over boring information in parentheses after every citation, and properly done footnotes look professional and scholarly in my opinion. It helps to be a bit of a perfectionist with them too, and in a very sad way it is quite satisfying at the end.
