Bit late in the day but...

I've never been to The Islington Academy before so to find it was in a shopping precinct was a bit of a surprise. Not the biggest of venues (only about half the size of the old LA2/Mean Fiddler) the sound wasn't the greatest I've heard but it was still good quality.

Canadian three piece CAULDRON were up first. 80s post-modernism with all the trimmings - appalling hand-drawn artwork for their t-shirt designs, cut off denim clothes and a selection of songs which sound like they were written in their sleep by Dokken. Unfortunately, they also had a woeful (but thankfully short) drum solo, a truly painful guitar solo (again, I'd like to think post-modern irony but I'm actually not so sure) and a singer who really needs to rethink his career. His enthusiasm was infectious but his inability to hold even a single note or hit anything resembling the correct one became grating after a short while.
Good songs, shame they couldn't play them. 5/10

DEATH ANGEL were a big part of the reason I was there last night and they didn't disappoint. And considering they didn't play anything off my favourite album (Frolic Through the Park) that was quite an achievement. Concentrating largely on The Ultraviolence and Killing Season, they tore through the likes of Voracious Souls, Kill As One, Evil Priest, Seemingly Endless Time (from Act III), Dethroned and newie River of Rapture, dedicating their set to Debbie Abono (Promoter/manager/producer of a lot of the Bay Area Thrash bands) who died the same day as Dio.
9/10

As people were milling about before the start of NEVERMORE, I heard a couple of kids talking to each other, saying "We'll be alright here. There won't be any circle pits or anything for them".
Famous last words.
Beyond Within instantly turned the crowd turned into a seething mass of arms, legs, heads and elbows, not letting up for the entire set. A small circle pit ended up taking over a good half of the crowd by the hour mark and there really wasn't any safe place to stand. Marvellous
The set's already been posted, as have some of Warrel's comments, so there's nothing much left for me to say apart from bloody hell.
10/10

1. Beyond Within
2. The River Dragon Has Come
3. Your Poison Throne
4. Born
5. Emptiness Unobstructed
6. Inside Four Walls
7. The Seven Tongues of God
8. The Termination Proclamation
9. This Godless Endeavour
10. The Heart Collector
11. The Obsidian Conspiracy
12. Enemies of Reality

Got to say, I thought nevermore were really really boring. I had to leave after a few songs. Death Angel were as always amazing.
