Best Swedish Death Metal Band?
Moderators: James, Craig, Resilience Records
In case anybody's actually wondering, I'm the solitary voter (thus far) for Arch Enemy.
I love Entombed and Dismember; At the Gates, athough not on the poll, to my mind only released one truly great (yes, I realise that's a bit of an understatement) album, and In Flames should have been included for everything up until Reroute to Remain (which I really like anyway, but it's plainly not death metal).
But Arch Enemy simply fucking rock, I don't care what anybody says. Accessible death metal isn't anything to be ashamed of. Their older stuff with Johan Liiva was incredibly underrated (to this day, Pilgrim is one of my favourite songs) and Angela was a more than capable replacement. Once I stick Anthems of Rebellion on, I find it very hard to get it off again.
Also, because of the obvious influence, they don't half sound like Heartwork era Carcass, which to my mind is never a bad thing.
My only problem wih AE is their live show, which is starting to become a little lazy and run of the mill. I find it hard to recommend a band who play a bass solo, drum solo, two guitar solos and at least one instrumental at each gig. Including links, of an average 75 minute set, I reckon Angela only actually sings for about an 50-55 minutes at each show. Plus she's started with the old Maynard Keenan no smoking rules trick.
I'm sorry, but that simply isn't metal.
In short:
Buy their albums because in the studio Arch Enemy just bloody destroy.
Don't go and see them live if you want to practice your lip reading skills.

I actually like Arch Enemy up to and including Wages of Sin, but I still don't think they're death metal. Their latest stuff is TOSS.
For a further controversial opinion, anyone else agree that 'The Red in the Sky is Ours' and even 'Terminal Spirit Disease' are better than the overrated, overly clean 'Slaughter of the Soul'?

I don't care how many 'exciting' time signatures they can play in, they were crap when they were doing more basic death/thrash and they're crap now, although Nothing does have some killer tones on. The ambient backgrounds are great, and Thordendahl is a superb guitarist, but the riffing is DULL.

I like Edge of Sanity,it's just that I prefer Dismember.
Well I think although Dreaming in Red is possibly the best metal song ever written, Crimson both as a song and as an album beats anything any band from Sweden have ever made, and that includes Abba.
But then, Edge of Sanity did have some attrocious albums so I voted Dismember.
Where am I going with this post? I don't know.

Isn't it that cunt Morrissey on the left?
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.
