I think they should just tell all venues to sell ear plugs at the bar for a quid (just the spongey ones). Job done. If you don't wear them fine. They are your ears, it should be your choice what you do with them.
The Health and Safety Executive tried to force musicians in orchestras to wear ear defenders while playing as technically the volumes get to loud. It's just ludicrous! Do they not think these musicians care about their ears? They've only worked their arse off for 20 years to get into one of the world top orchestras... do you think they want to go deaf! Instead of just reminding them that its loud and they should limit their exposure they go straight in and apply the same rules from a fucking building site to an orchestra!

Re: UK Music Venues - NO NOISE CONTROL Petition
I think most of the ones put in around our way are due to the neighbors (including shops or rival pubs) complaining as opposed to the musicians.
If you apply for an entertainments extension to your alcohol lisence it goes in the local paper, if one wirtten objection gets sumitted to the council in a month it's a no go. It's really fucking hard.
After that you have to submit door policy, prs rights, fire regulations, capacity inspections....
Then as tradition permits, no fuckers turn up!

Sorry, but I disagree. Live (rock) music is far too loud, and I don't want to have to foot bills on the NHS for people who purposefully damage their hearing.
The REAL problem is with the audience, who talk, shout, etc. throughout gigs. If you go to a classical music concert the experience is so much better, the sound quality is invariably better and not over-distorted and the crowd is more respectful because THEY'RE ACTUALLY THERE TO SEE THE MUSIC unlike loads of rock/metal fans who are there because it's an 'event' for their 'subculture.'

Yeah, actually I kind of agree with Bill there, due to my numerous Opeth experiences. People ALWAYS talk through the quiet bits (which are some of the most amazing parts of Opeth's songs sometimes, and there are a lot of them), and it's the most annoying, ridiculous, and disrespectful thing you can do to both the band and the members of the audience who are actually there to enjoy the music. That really pisses me off.
Although, I definitely do think all venues should sell cheapo ear plugs, that would be good.

Opeth is the worst, but far from only, example that I have experienced. Last time I saw them it was absolute misery.

Good point, people do ruin many live events.
Gee.... I don't know about the rest of you guys, but lately the only things that truly motivate me are erections and bowel movements.
